thin work in summarized in Prof.
Keltt's bulletin No. 105 on "Sweet Po
tato Investigation," which can la* of
great value to any planter in hit* Hwcct
potato culture. Other hulietinn on tho
subject are No. l-ili ami No. 1MJ,
l'rof, Keltt. found a light Handy
loam, moderately .supplied with or
ganic matter, to be the best noil for
thin crop. Hows should be slightly
ridged and about two and one-half to
three foot a|a?rt, according to the va
riety planted. Plants Hhould be
pieced from eighteen Inches to two
ft et apart in the row.
The best method o.' planting sweet
potat<H's Is with cuttings from vines.
If slip beds wo.ro not net out early
enough this year for g<s>d vine cut
tings at this time, or If no slips were
grown, It Is advisable for one to buy
cuttings from the neighbor. Planting
slips is more expensive thau plant
ing vine cuttings. Besides, the fungi
which produce rots are lens likely to
be curried on a vine cutting than on
slips pulled directly from the old po
tatoes. Thus potatoes grown from
vine cuttings will probably be freer
from rot than those grown from
pllps. It Is an easy matter to get
eftough vines for cut tings If seed jh>
tatoes In sufllclent quantity are bed
ded early enough.
A fertilizer suggested for sweet
potatoes Is .5(H) pounds kalnit, IKK)
pounds cotton seed xneai and 200
pounds of 10 jH?r cent. phosphate.
This should be applied at the rate of
800 to 1,000 pounds iH?r acre.
Frequent shallow cultivation is lm
portnnt In sweet potato growing, as
in the culture of many other crops.
After a large number of variet.V
tests made at Clemson College, Prof.
Keltt found the best variety for tar
hie use to be the Nancy Hail, with
Pumpkin Yam next. For stock feed
ing purposes, he advises Nancy Ilall,
Brazilian, Southern Queen, Providence,
Myer's Early, Hed Jersey and Molly
