William Oaston Smith., veteran rail way Conductor of 54 years service, known affectionately as "Captain Billy Smith" by thousands uf persons all over the country, died at his home on ('res well street at 3 :20 o'clock Thurs day morning at the age of 75 years. Captain Billy Smith was a true and honoruhle gentleman. He was never heard to mftke an unkind remark of any one or to sj>eak harshly to any of his men, all of whom loved him devotedly. He was a man who stood high with his employers, having the confidence- -of all the officials of ~th<r Southern railway during the entire time of Ms long, faithful service to the road. The traveling public count ed hlin as a friend, and he was their friend. No more popular inan ha* ev er served as conductor in the state of South Cnrotlnn. " \ ? <>n January 1, lJttii, ('apt. Billy Smith was retired from active service with pay. The^-wnlway company offi cials wanted to show their apprecia tion in this way. lie was getting old and had deserved a rest during his declining years. With the order re tiring this veteran came beautiful let ters from the head officials of the road, the thoughts expressed iu them lad ing cherished by Capt. Smith during the years in inactivity. ('apt. ^rnith had often remarked that it was his wish that his end could come while asleep, and his de sire was fulfilled. Life departed quiet ly without apy struggle.
