crimson rose.

caused much merriment, as they

The hostess served a dainty salad
course, followed by cake and ices,
in which the color scheme was "clev

sational attack "upon someone else.
As the scuttle-fish eludes its pursu
er by clouding the surrounding wa
ter with the contents of its ink sac,
so the political nd venturer takes ad
vantage of the ignorance and pre
judices of the people lo escape from
his indefensible position by muddy
ing the waters of public opinion.
A case, in point is the recent, at
tack made upon the" religious press
for carrying Coca Cola advertising.
This attack was made by h politi
cian who was supposed to be an ex
pert in chemistry but who, having
brought a spit against the Coca Co
la- Company , Was humiliated by hav
ing to Acknowledge that he could
not qualify as an expert. The court
decided in favor of the Coca Cola
Company as it was clearly' shown
that the only essential difference be
tween Coca Cola and coffee or tea
Is that -the former contains only
about half as much caffeine as the
latter and that the flavor is differ
ent ,
The question as to whether It is
right to advertise Coca Cola seems
to resolve itself therefore into the
question as to whether it is right
to advertise coffee, tea, chocolate,
Cocoa and Other beverages of *he

Tho Constitution of the United
States provides that "No person shall

Henry Clay served as United States
senator from December 2d, 1806, to
March 3, 1807. He was at that time
only twenty-nine years old, having
been born April 12, 1777.
