at Wyoming. it has about 1.00,000

tjnin 1,000 negroes. ' Three times

Western states for us. to say whai
the result will be so far as actual
trial is concerned. I think tin; re
sult ih Chicago the tit her day is
decidedly against woman suffrage.
Tlie only gain v\as to multiply vo
uys. \s to voting out the saloon
In many of the counties,, thin was
a good resul:; but it was purchas
ed at too high a price. Women in
politics means women away from
home; and desirable as the remov
al of the open saloon is, we had bet.'
tor put up with the saloon till tlie'
men will put it out. rather than
thrust women in political life.
"Hut all these arguments are so
phistical, if my 'position is right,
that woman in politics ,is^ contrary
to Cod's plan of the world. i'aul
distinctly te;jches woman's subordi
nation to man. He discusses the
relation of woman to society in his
first letter to the Corinthians. I lis
advice against marriage is based up
on the ground of expediency. Some'
think I'aut was a bachelor. Others,
and I anions them, think he was a
widower. It is immaterial to th*>
point 'at issue. Paul meant that
under the conditions then existing
in Corinth, tin* mixed state of hea
then society, it was better to remain
unmarried. Hut elsewhere he eom
mends marriage, and In his letter
to the Kphesians lifts it almost to
the dignity of a sacrament, lie dis
tinct l\ says that in this he is giv
ing advice to the Corinthians, not
imposing commands. Hut he does
tell them that they ought not to
appear In public with uncovered
heads Why? For two reasons.
First, because the heathen women,
and especially the couresans of
Corinth, uncovered their heads and
(?lipped heir hair in order to assert
their equality with men. For Chris
tian women to do that, and conform
to the heathen custom, was to lay
themselves liable to be classed with
these bad women. This principle is j
as valid for Columbia today as for
Corinth then, onlv it applies to the
dress now Instead of the head-dress.
Last year Mr. Rok, editor of the
Ladies' llome Journal, more than
once told his readers that the fash
ions of the women's dresses were
taken from the immoral women of
. I'arls. The slit skirt, which is be
; coming shOcklugb' common on our
streets, is the attire of the demi
monde It is perhaps too much to
i expect the thoughtless young wo
? men of our city to. know these facts,
but where are their mothers? Is
modesty an obsolete virtue? Now,
if Paul were writing to the Chris
tians in Columbia instead of in Co
rlnth, uixt in thlw day, hu would
urge them to shun t Ii4t slit uktrt for
tjie huiiu' reason* thai ho urged the
Corinthian* to keep their l)Mdl cov
ered. If you mhv yqii don't Cftre
