the teachers of the Malvern Hill
school, are getting up an entertain

school has given several entertain
ments and they were all good. "An
Evening of Fun" promises to be
one of real pleasure and fun. The

dence of neglect. Instead of see
ing well kept gardens^ producing in
abundance a variety fresh vege
tables for the table every day in
ijie year, what do we see? All too
often we see in the Spring only a
few of the hardy vegetables such
as cabbage, onions and turnips. In
the mid-summer a few of the frost

squashes, and a little later in the
season a bountiful crop of weeds.
Most farmers and suburban dwell
ers make some effort to grow fruit
and vegetables for home use, but
in the majority of cases they ? do

is a common sight to observe peo
ple on their way home from town

land like ours, where these things
grow so easily and cheaply, people
ordering canned fruits and vegeta
bles from the wholesale houses of
our large cities, paying for the cans,
the canning, "the freight, and be
sides getting an inferiior product.
The opinion has become all too
prevalent among the people of]
this state that our section Is not j
one where high class fruit and veg- j
etables can be grown. ' We exclaim I
when we see the beautiful packages
of fine well-placed fruit, and vege
tables "sent in" from other parts i
of the country: "South Carolina
cannot grrow such^produce! " The
fault, however, does rft>t lie with our
State, but with ourselves. We have
all the natural requisites for the
production of the very best fruit >
and vegetables. If we radd 4o this
a full share of energy, coupled with !
a better understanding of the prin- i
ciples of fruit and vegetable grow- j
ing the result would prove a reve- ;
lation. There would be no more
craving In the spring for a ? plate .
of luscious strawberries, no more I

longings for a rosy-cheeked peach;'
no more unquenehed desires for a
"something green" in winter, and
above all, there would _ be no more
orders for canned goods. Instead

with the choicest and most whole
some diet that our country affords.
It is true that not every fruit
and vegetable will reach perfec
tion in each individual locality, but
practically every kind can be grown
for homo use and tho majority of
them, If given tho proper treat
ment, can be made to attain high
quality.
If one wishes to grow quality
fruit , and vegetables, one must give
them quality care. T^ocate the
fruit and vegetable garden In a
place all* to itself; plant desirablo
varieties in tho proper way. so as
to have a continuous succession,
and devoto to them the same care
and attention that ia given tho
standard field crops and it ? will

workers, they are accomplishing
