A WORD TO MY FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS:
You very often hear the statement, "Life is one delightful thing after another." Well, a mer
cantile business seems to just fit that case, only it is not always "one delightful thing aft^? another."
This season we again have a short crop to contend with. In Kershaw County there will not be as
many bales of cotton by several thousand as in 1911. We all hope that the price will raise on this
account, at least average higher than last year, and doubtless it would if the crop average was on a
par with this county, but reports from the Southwest come of a good crop which may have a ten
dency to keep the price down. I, along with other merchants, anticipated a big crop, and with this
in view made heavy purchases as my business was growing so fast that this was necessary. Business
is not what I expected so far. Bills are coming due and in order that the merchandise may meet
these bills promptly 1 deem it advisable to make this strong bid for your business, offering you some
splendid bargains right at the beginning of the season, and in making these very low prices on the
merchandise I can in a way boost the price of your cotton. Assuring you that 1 shall be glad to see
you, one and all, either as a customer or a visitor to this great Cotton Carnival, I am,

1895- A Review of This Business -1912
Seventeen years ago I opened this store. K 1 have "made good." It has been my sincere desire to bo
right both in merchandise and in methods, and it was inevitable that a great business should result from
right principles rightly applied to right merchandise. I have had your confidence. My policy, "One Price
to All," 1ias met with approval. Honesti values; corteous treatment; looking after your interests as well
as my own, has been the main factors in my growth and success.
Successes like tills do not Just happen? they are the result of definite causes, and it is useless for

faith with you and to this end I expect to exert my best energies.

allreudy in Millinery, but tuv head milliner tolls nio that we never can got rid of the stock at this rate.
Something must be done. Well, I am game to do it, and have given orders in the Millinery Department
