Taking this view of tbe matter, there Is nothing to be gained by dealing harshly with' the aged Senator, No citizen cf South Carolina should be guilty of making 0 mistake toconse Senator Tillman made a similar mistake years .ago; and evil should not be returned for evil which hi* antagonists believe he did their friends or their cause in the heat of political battle. Sen ator Tillman has been an honest man in politics; and doubtless, as he says, never inttentlonally wrong ed individuals or was guilty 'of con duct calculated to injure bis peo ple or his state. An affirmative answer to this last message he sends his fellow citizens will undoubtedly raise the whole state In the estima tion of the best citizens' of the country, as an evidence of the fact that South Carolinians can rise abov factionalism and partisanship in po litics and perform a noble deed in the face of division of personal opin ion and in spite of pant controver sies. ? The examination for the award of vacant scholarships in Wlnthrop Col lege and for the admission of new students will he held at the Coun ty Court House on Friday, July 5th, at a. m. .Applicants must be no less than fifteen years of age. When Scholarship* are vacant after July 5 they will bo awarded to those making the highest average at thlH examination, provided they meet the conditions governing the award.
