City Democratic league opened the
meeting with a few remarks, and
then called on Rev. H? B. Brow;
for a prayer. After prayer, Mr.
Watkins introduced the. candidates
for Alderman, commencing at ward
oue and Baid that he would save
the' best for the last; that is, the
speeches of the two candidates for
Mayor. The candidates for alder
man were allowed one half hour,
and for mayor five minutes each.

city of 100,000 people. Says water
for fountain in Kershaw Park cost
city $12.00 in one month, and he
ordered Bame cut off. It city own
ed plant that water could be fur
nished fountains free of charge.
City could save the exhorbitant fire
hydrant rent, and could extend
mains for fire protection, and there
by reduce fire Insurance risks. Fa
vors licenses, but not high licenses.

Death of Mr. Jesse Klrkland.
Mr. Jesse Klrkland, the last sur
viving brother of "the gallant Rich
ard, Klrkland," died at his home
on the faqtory hill at an early hour
on Monday^ morning last. Mr.
Klrkland loaves surviving him four
daughters and two sons. The re
mains were laid to rest in Mount
Olivet Baptist Church yard b$ the
side of hb> wlfo who predeceased
him some time ago. .
