Storm In Sumter.
A severe storm passed over sec
tions of Sumter county last Mon
day afternoon, doing considerable
. damage. Perhaps tho most pecu
liar accident from the storm was
that which happened to a negro,
-on Mr. Ezra Hodge'B place. The
iBumter Item gives tho following
account of the accident:
?"On Monday aftornoon during the
thu&der storm about 6 o'clock a
Qtgro working for Mr. Ezra Hodge,
few miles southwest of the city,
1NM severely shocked by a light
ning bolt which killed his horse
and t?re his shoes from his feet.
The name of the negro could not
"fry:'? obtained, but the statement
made to the reporter of The Item
was tb*t he was changing his plow
at the time that the bolt struck
the horse, ran down the trace and
went into the ground at bis feet.
The negro was kncwked uncon
scious and lay on tfee ground in
that eondition for about tw6 hours
before he t#oovered hie senses.

and your many readers. To you
because it was your tramping
ground in your early childhood.?
To many others because they never
saw or heitrd of Westvllle. Now
all that Westvllle lacks of being
in the front ranks of other little
towim, Is a graded school, hotel,
water works, Ice factory, and
street carH.
Our community was vlulled lust
Monday night by a nice little rain
which revived vegetation very much
and made the face of our farmers
look bright and more cheerful.
Our community wan also vitdted
last night by agoodlv number of
Camden's most popular young peo
ple which brought joy and gladness
to all whom they came in contact
with. A few of the party were strati
gers to the people of Westville, but
their cheerful and happy spirits
took full possession of our peo
ple, and their visits in the future
will meet with a hearty welcome.
Those in the party were Miss Ida
(loodale. Miss Jennie Dixon. Willie)
Dixon, Miss Annie LI. Fletcher, and
Miss Ethel Sturkey, Mr. Frank
Skinner, Mr. Koger Fletcher, Mr.

The young people visited the
home of Mr. and Mrs. D. (1. Fletch
er, where very delicious cake and
Ice cream were served.
We also spent a very pleasant
day yesterday at Mr. It. L. Hell's
Fish I'ond, near West ville. tiuite

S. F. Kelly, of Cantey Ilill, is se
riously ill. Wo trust that this
splendid woman will be spared to
her loved ones and soon be restor

FORMER CITIZEN DKWl).
?Hill Hughes Died ill Washington
and Drought Here for Durial.
Mr. Jas. Ij. Hughes, who up to
about 12 years ago resided in this
city, died in Washington, I). C.,
on the 10th inst. His remains, ac
companied by a Masonic escort,
were brought here Monday for in
terment.
Mr. Hughes was about 4 4 years
of age and was born and reared
in Camden. He was .well known
to all of our people who will re
gret to know of his sad death.
He at one time conducted a drug
business in Camden, under the
firm name of Hughes & Roberts,
soon afterwrads he entered the Pull
man ??:?r service, as a conductor,
which position he filled until the
time of his death.
The funeral services were con
ducted at the residence of Miss
Cornelia Mlckle, and Interment was
in the ^Quaker cemetery. The fol
lowing gentlemen acted as pall
bearers H. h. Watklns, David
Wolfe. 10. J. McLeod, John it.
Itoodale. Is. W. Murchison and (?.
C. C.itt.
Mr. Edward Hughes, brother of
the deceased. <>f Birmingham. Ala.,
