Cotton Piece Goods Rates Settled.
jreenville. According to a state
ment made by Lewis W. I'arker, the
fight between the cotton manufac
turers and the railroads for a more
convenient schedule of rates on cot
ton piece goods between interior
points and Charleston.
Mr. Parker's statement in effect Is
that a settlement has been reached
between the mill men and the rail
roads on two questions: one Is the
through rate between South Carolina
mills and New York, and an agree
ment on this makes 45 cents per 100
a maximum rate.

Drew Four Aces, Dropped Dea'M.
Spartanburg. When Nathan Ander
son, a negro about 60 years old
caught four aces In a poker game he
dropped dead.
Several negroes were playing cards
in a barn on Broad street, within a
block of police headquarters, and the
cards must have been running "cold"
when four of the biggest oneB fell to
Anderson and he gazed upon them.
The shock was too great, and he died
or heart failure.

Lexington Tomatoes In Winter.
Lexington.?As an experiment. Mrs.
B. D. Clarke planted a number of to
matoes early in tho winter, placing
the boxes in her hot-house. The seed
came up and the plants flourished
from the start. They were thinned
out, carefully watered and looked
after, and the stalks are large and
the tomatoes well developed. The ex
perlment has proven to be such a
success that Mrs. .Clarke intend?

Has Cardinal Gibbons' Approval.
Cardinal Gibbons, the highest uu
thoriiy of the Roman Catholic church
In America, has expressed his ap
proval of Tuberculosis day, which la
to be observed by the churches of the
United StateB on or about April 30,
and of the general organized antl tu
berculosis campaign, according to a
report of an interview made public by
the National Association for the Study
and Prevention ot Tuberculosis.
The Interview was granted by his
eminence to H. Wlrt Steele, executive
secretary of the Maryland Associa
tion for the Prevention and Relief of
Tuberculosis, and Dr. Charles O'Dono
van, one of the leading physicians of
Baltimore. The cardinal expressed
his entire sympathy with the plan of
the Tuberculosis day movement and
indorsed the program both of the
Maryland association and qf the na
tional association.
How He Averted a Duel.
The following Is told of former
Senator Joe Blackburn of Kentucky:
In the days of his youth the Ken
tucklan was aBked by a friend to sec
ond him In a duel. He consented,
and at sunrise the parties met at the
appointed place. Now, It was this
Kentucklan's duty to say the last
words touching the termB of the duel.
But, although he faithfully performed
this duty, the duel never took place.
A murmur of "Wily not?" invari
ably goes around whenever this story
Is told, whereupon the answer Is as
follows:
"For the very simple reason; When
Joe finished speaking it was too dark

Preparing Oyster#.
Divine Pointa.?The custom which
forbade the use of oysters In the ?

After?The?ter Oysters.?To a pint of
oyeters with their liquor, a dash of
paprika, celery salt, bait, a squeeze of
lemon Juice and half a cup of rich j
bouillon. Cook until the edges curl,
then serve on buttered toast
Lincoln Stew.?l'luce a quart of
milk In a double broiler, season with
paprika, celery salt and salt Urate a
small onion, allowing the Juice to drip
into the milk, add a dozen oyster
crackers well crushed and two table
spoonfuls of butter. When boiling hot
add a quart of oysters with the liquor.
When they commence to curl, remove
them to the tureen and add a beateu
egg. Serve at once.
Oyster Loaf.?Cut a , box shaped
piece from a loaf of rather stale
bread. Iirush with melted butter and
brown In the oven. Fill with fried
oysters or creamed oysters. To cream
oysters, allow a dozen oysters to a
cup of Cream. Heat the cream to the
boiling poiut, add the oysters, and
when curled, remove and serve imme
diately. The aeasoning may be added
by each guest to suit his taste. v
Oyster* a la Creole.?Melt two table
spoonfuls of butter, add a slice of
onion and cook until a pale brown.
Remove the onion and add a table
spoonful of flour and when brown a
cupful of tomatoes. When hot add a
pint of drained oysters, cook until the
edges curl, add a drap of tabasco, a
tablespoonful of minced parsley and
Bait to taste. Serve on toast.
Oyster Cocktails.?Clean and chill
60. small oysters; mix with three ta
blespoonfuls of horseradish, one tea
spoonful of tabasco sauce, two table
spoonfuls of vinegar, three table
spoonfuls of Worcestershire sauce,
five tableBpoonfuls of lemon < Juice,
three tablespoonfuls of tomato catsup
and one and a fourth teaspoonfuls of
salt. Serve In lemon, grapefruit or to
mato cups.

The Tea and Coffee Pots.
Many otherwise exemplary house
keepers are most careless In regard to
the care given the tea and coffee pots.
Much of our poor tea and coffee might
be traced to pn unclean pot. $
The tea ttnd cofaee pots should be
as carefully washed and cared for as
any of the table'dishes. As both tea
and coffee have so strong an odor. It
Is necessary in order to have the pots
sweet to give them a good sunning In
tHe air.
When the pots are not In frequent
use they are apt to grow musty. Try
keeping a loaf of sugar In the pot to
absorb the Impurities.
When the tea is brewed In the kitch
en, a stone or crockery teapot Is the
beat to use.
Coffee pots should never be allowed
to stand around with the grounds in
tbiem. They Bhould be thrown out and
the pot boiled out with cold water.
There are many cooks who keep the
coffee over and warm It up, with fresh
water, for the next meal. This should
never be permitted, as there is a bit
ter principle developed which Is most
injurious.
If the coffee is put into cheese cloth
begs the grounds are then easily re
moved and the coffee will always be
clearer and better. -
Household Hints.
Cream cheese mixed with cherries
or cranberries makes a nice sandwich
filling.
In cooking broilers all the Juice la
raved and much of the flavor other
wise lost is retained by brushing the
fowl well with olive oil before broil
ing.
Rinse laces in sktmmed milk, never
in bluing water. The milk adds a lit
tle stiffness and the color 1b soft and
creamy.
Serve poached eggs on thin round*
of bread sauted in a little butter.
