THE GUNNISON TUNNEL.
Facts About Gigantic Project For
Reclamation of Arid Lands.
The I'ncotnpahgre project, as tho
opening of tho Gimnison Tunnel, on
the western slope of the Colorado
Koekies, is known, will reclaim more
than ]. -.0.000 acres of land, in the Uu

(iiinnisiin liiser is diverted through
six-mile tunnel, under a 000-foot
? onnt.im, to make the reclamation
I '< * ss i l le. "1* lie cost of constructing the
tnnr.il ap.d the heces>arv canals was
nearly .000,000. This valley has
! ecu demons! rated to he one of the
greatest places in the world for the
ra:sin*/ of fruit, as well .is le^s fancy
crops. The work on this tunnel was
1 ogun in February, lOOo. and com
I leted this \ oar. The carrying ca
pacity of the Gunnison Tunnel is 1,
ilOO cubic foot a second. The water
is taken from the bottom of the Gun
nison Kiver and goes through this
concrete tunnel? a solid body nine
feet high and ten and one-half feet
wide. The rneoinpahgre Kiver bed
is used tor the main tlmv of the wa
j tcr fr.uu the Gunnison, and there are
cast and we*t canals, watering both
sulcs of the \ alley. These canals arc
built along the extreme edges of tho
mesas and thus will bring practical

also has secured the rights to exist

come out of the land reclaimed. It
is estimated, that the cost of water
rights under the Gunnison Tunnel
will be about $35 an acre, which will
be divided into ten payments, at tho
will of the purchaser. Unlike most
government projects, there will be
very- little " homesteading" in tho

Tracks in Sand Tell Story of Vftia
Battle With Thirst.
Han Bernardino, Cal., October 23.- -
T. H. Kellogg, a rancher, while ridin#
across (he Mojave desert, in the ('ar*
shoe Creek country, on Friday ,t came
across the trucks of two teams. The
wandering trails indicated to his ex
perienced oye that the drivers of the
team either were lost or did nol have
control of mind left. He followed the
trail* for some distance am] finally
came ui>on a camp wagon and a bug
gy, ami farther away a horse dying
of thirst.
ilere, evidently, was the starting
point of a great tragedy.'
Following the trail further, he dis
covered the tracks of a man and a
woman and three children, Uneven
at times, retreating and wAvering in
pujrposo, as though the travellers did
not know which wuy to turn, the foot
prints on the sand told of the search
of wnicf ngninst n despcrntcly grow
ing need, .* *
Sometimes tho trail of one or tho
other of the children disappeared, in
dicating that the father or the mother
had expended the last drop of energy
in carrying their ilttle ones. Tho
trail followed the bed of a dry creek
for many miles and led off to that
country from which few travellers
return. Who the lost ones are is un
known.
Kellogg returned to civilization and
searching parties were started out at
once.

Coffee Usually Moans Sickness but
Postum Always Moons Health.
Those who have nevor tried tho
experiment of leaving off coffee and
drinking Postum in Its place and In
this way regaining health and happi
ness can learn much from tho experi
ence of others who have made the
trial.
. One who knows says: "I drank
coffee for breakfast every morning
until I had terrible attacks of indi
gestion producing days of discomfort
and nights of sleeplessness. I tried
to give up the use of coffee entirely
but found It hard to go from hot
coffee to a glass of water. Then 1
tried Postum.
It was good and tho effect was so
ploasant that I soon learned to love
it and have used It for several years.
I Improved immediately after I loft
off coffee and took on Postum and am
now entirely cured of my indigestion
and other troubles, all of which were
due to coffee. I am now well and
contented and all because I changed
from coffee to Postum.
"Tostum !? much easier to make'

so even and always reliable We
never use coffee now in oar family.
We use Postum and are always well."
