PRESIDENT ENROUTE AGAIN
Speaks With Difficulty at Dallas,
Texas, and Talk* to Children at
Terrell Bunday.
Dallas, Texa*, Special. ? President
Taft arrived here at 5:110 o'clock Katr
urday afternoon nfter a fast run by
special train from Houston, wheru he
?)>ent three hours in I lie morning, He
wu? taken immediately to tlie Stute
fair yrouuds, where he made an open
nir speech to h throng which tilled
the big race track grandstand end
spread far out in tilery direction. Mr.
Tuft wuh ko hoarse that ho could be
heurd only ? short distance, despite
heroic efforts on his part. He spoke
ugain briefly Saturday night at
banquet tendered him at the Oriental
hotel, and retired oil his train pre
paratory to leaving early Sunday
morning for St. lxmis.
The President'# voice began u
grow husky alter his speeeh at Coc.
pii k Christ i Friday ami broke down
almost completely during his address
at Houston Saturday morning when
he tried to make hifnself heard to a
crowd which tilled four intersecting
streets for two blocks in each direc
tion.
On account of hoarseness the Pres
ident did not attempt to make a long
speech, either at the fair grounds or
t In; banquet and confined himself in
<ach instance to an expression of his
appreciation of the warmth of his
welcome in Texas. He completed, on
arriving here, his eighth day in the
State.
"I was asked," said, the President
at the fair grounds, "if 1 had any
doubt by this time about Texas be
ing a part of the l:nion. 1 replied
? that the only doubt 1 had was wheth
er the Cnion was not a part of
Texas. ' '
At Terrell, Tex., Sunday moving
-the President spoke to u throng of
eager- faced little. Sunday school chil
dren and delivered a near approach
(i> his usual Sunday sermon. "1 think
ir must have been a month ago when
I was passing through Chicago that
I received a telegram asking mo to
stop at Terrell," he said. "I con
tinued to receive telegrams from that
t imf* until I reached I he Pacific coast.
I replied that I was going to stop at
Terrell if it cost a leg. I am very
fihid to see the children here this Sun
day morning. I am glad to see them
wit 1 1 their flags.
"Von know what I lie flags are, my
children 1 "
"Yes, sir," replied' a score of
voices. "The flag of t ho United
Stat cs. ' '
" 1 >o you know the flag of Texas T"
asked the President.
' ' What is it 1"
"Tlic f.itno Star."
"Are von loyal to both flags?"
" Yes, "sir."
" 1 bet you are. Now, my children,
do yiui you know who I am?"
' ' Yes, sir. ' '
"Who am 1 ?"
"President Taft."
". 1 rather think that you believe
the President has more power than ho
really lias.
"He is a sin't of figurehead for the
nation for four years," continued the
President seriously.
"He is a kind of man that thev
blame everything for, if it goes wrong
and if it goes right he does not get
any credit for it. But, my children,
if you permit me to call you such, al
though some of you are far beyond
the time when you perhaps ought to
have .that name, that flag represents
tlu> sovereignty of your country, and
the reason why you are. here this
morning to see me is because for four
years I am the Chief Kxeeutive ofllcer
of the* United States and as such for
that time represent the sovereignty
of the nation, and am. entitled, as
long as I conduct myself properly, to
your respect as the head of the nation.
In four years I will step down and
out, and I won't be entitled to vour
! respect any more than any other citi
zen. ' '
