at Governor's Island by navigating his
big biplane successfully out over the
bay and around the Statue of Liberty.
It was the first tlmo the goddess bad
seen anything except the gulls circle
around her lofty head, and the flight
takes rank with the crossing of the
English Channel by Bleriot as a his
toric event in the annt ls of aeronau
tics. V
Wright made three flights, two in
tfce morning and one ju?t before sun
down. Curtiss mada only one, and
that was so short that it amounted to
nothing more tha a test of the motor
and the propeller of his machine. But
both the aviators were well satisfied
with the results.
From the start the complete mast*
ery which Wright exercised over his
machine Impressed every one. There
was something heroic in the pose of
this lean, clean-shaven man as he flew
between earth and sky. He sat rigid,
his legs braced flrmly against the nar
row rail In front, hla left hand on the
lever that regulates the forward
planes, his right on the one that does
tlio double duty of manipulating th# ?
rudder and adjusting the flexible tips
of the great wings so that the ma
chine balances Itself on the curves.
Long, loud whistles of tugs and
steamers told of his triumphant pro
gress, and In less than five minutos
the machine came in sight again as It
rounded the north end of Governor's
Island. As he neared the starting
point Wright made a graceful icml
circlo and famo to earth within fifty
feet of the railway from which ho
had riBen.
Wright's second flight, In which ho
went across the bay almost to the
New Jersey shore, and circled the
Statute of Liberty, was more spectac
ular still. It was shortly after 10.15
a. rt., when he left the ground, and
he showed the precision with whloh
his machine could bo handled by mak
ing a complete circle over the Island's
eitcnslpn that had a diameter of lit
tle more than 100 yards. Meanwhile
he was rising steadily lu a spiral
course, and by the time he was head
ed once more for the water and the
"Jersey shore he had gained an ulti
tude of about 'lOO feet. Still rising,
ho headed straight away from the
land and in a few seconds he was but
over tho water.

In that part of the bay paused to
watch the unprecedented spectacle.
Wright held a straight course toward
Bedloe's Island and passed the Statue
ui Libeity at just about the level of
the goddess' head. He continued on
until it seemed to his friends on Gov
ernor's Island as If he reached a point
above the Jersey Bhore, but Wright
snld afterward that hovswung around
when still over the water.
The Lusltaula was outward bound,
and all her pasfeengers were on deck.
Just as he soared above them tho Lu
sitanla opened her whlstlo In a tre
mendous blast, and Wright said after
ward he distinctly felt his airship
rock and reel In the burst of hot air
that came up with theoscaping steam.
She passed within twenty feet of Lib
erty's torch, then headed slightly
northward and with a graceful curve
came above Governor's Island once
more, Just to the south of Fort Will
iam.

"I was making about fifty miles an
hour on the way back from the Jer
sey shore," said Wright after alight

The trial was a complete success, and
I am delighted with the way the ma
chine behaved. I had no trouble
from tho addition of the canoe, which
has been lashed to the bottom of the
machine as a safeguard against n
