Milw Butter From Oil.
The Standard Oil Company has de

chemists have discovered a process
whereby they tan make gilt-edge
butter as a by-product of crude po

have been prepared and contracts
Boon will be li t for putting up a bin
butter-making plant ait a new depart

Constable Hook section of Hayonno,
It was thought the limit had been
reached in the by-product, business

day no one had an idea the Standard
Oil had designs against the butter
and The oleomargarine industries. It
in predicted confidently that withiu a
year the only butter on sale in the
American market will hear the
Standard Oil label, and that petro
leum butler also will lie an active and
aggressive competitor with creamery
butter for supremacy in the foreign
markets.
Since the new process was discov
ered every precaution possible has
been taken by the Standard Oil olll
cials to prevent the secret leaking. It
was only by accident it became pub
lic. The story, which comes from
r.avonne. is I hat the chemists and
Standard <bl otTiiials were so elated
by the discovery that they made
eight pounds of the butter and put it
in a lux to be shipped to John 1).

" Petroleum Butter" was used. That
led to inquiries, which dually elicited

that. A.**crt;ion also wa? made "that

the fat t that the purity and whole*

Pr. Wiley and other publicity seek
t rs in their so-called pure food cam

instance, suffered from the conflscia

honey, made on the ground that it
did not conform to certain pure food
standards. It was not charged that
the honey was unwholesome, adulter
ated. or impure, but that Dr. \\ iley
bad tixed a "standard" for honey.
It must contain a certain proportion
of ash. The Cuban honey is sold by
Mr. MacVeagh 's firm contained a
larger amount of ash than the stan

who made the honey culled the pro

done by the bees themselves!
And this honey, pure, wholesome,

charged with violating the pure food

on kerosene, or coal oil, Instead of

would add materially to the advan

sensed over other types of cai's.
There were jBOino |>e<?plo, however,
who wore sceptical as to whether or
not the new fuel could bo used with
complete bucccfh and, theveforo, the
makers of the White Oar, the White
Company, of Cleveland, Ohio, deter

From the standpoint of the public,
no test more satisfactory could have
been selected. Klrat-*of all, the dls
tanee covered on the (Hidden Tour,
from Detroit to Denver and thence to
Kansas city, wan 2GS0 miles. This
was certainly more than #Hfflo|ent to
bring out any weaknesses, if such had
existed. Still more Important was
the fact that tho car was at all (lines
while on the road under the supervi
sion of observers, named by. those
who entered other contenting cars.
Therefore, It would have been impos
sible for tho driver of the White to
have even tightened a bolt, without
the fact bcjng tToft d and a penalty in

guarded by Pinkerton detectives and
could not bo approached by any one.

"A feature of the tour which was

that the White Steamer used kero
sene, or 'coal oil,' ns fuel Instead of
gasoline. Tho new fuel worked
splendidly throughout tho 2(550-mlle
Journey, and all claims made In its
behalf were fully proven. First of
ail, as regards cheapness, the White
driver scoured kerosene all along the
route from 0 cents to 10 cents cheap
er per gallon than was paid for gaso
lene. Secondly, the new fuel was
handled without any precautions, and
it was not unusual to see kerosene
being poured -Into the fuel tank while
the crew of the car and an Interested
crowd stood by with lighted cigars
and cigarettes. At the finish of the
J tour, the White was the only car per
j Convention Hall, where the technical
examination took place, without
draining its fuel tank. Thirdly, the
new fuel proved to bo absolutely
without smoke, or smell. Fourthly,
i kerosene could be purchased at what
ever part of the route whs mosf con
venient, and not once during the trip
through the ten States of the Middle
West was there found a grocery store
where kerosene was not readily and
cheaply obtainable. Finally, the
