DESCRIPTION OF WRIGHT MACHINE
The machine used by the Wrights
nt Washington consists of two planes,
one live feet above the other, and
measuring thirty-six feet from tip to
tip. The seat for the operator is
placed in the centre of tho lower
plane, off to tho left of the motor.
The paso< tiger sits on the other side
of the motor.
The motor Itself Is a product of tho
Wright brothers ? a four-cylinder,
thirty horsepower, water-cooled gas
oline engine. The gasoline Is puijtped
directly- Into the Intake pipes, there
being no carbureters.
The tips of tho planes are flexible
for tho space of about twelve feet.
By means of a lever thoy can bo
turned In a curve, resembling a hello
fold. the wings moving in opposite di
rections. A second lever controls the
twin rudders, which are supported by
a brace ten feot from tho rear of tho
planes. By working the two levers
together the equilibrium of the ma
chine Is maintained.
Ten feet in front of tho operator's
feat two planes resembling a box kite
about fifteen l*=v three feot uro used
for controlling tho ascent and descent.
Two propellers about nine feet in di
ameter and revolving in opposite di
rections are used to thrust the aero
plane forward.
The weight of the machine, includ
ing both operator and passenger, 1b a
trill o under 1 200 pounds.

Aero Club, M. Blerlot and his wife
left for Paris. Tho aviator expects
to return in October to attempt a
flight from London to Manchester for
a prize of $60,000 offered by a Lon

air machines owned by members of a

At the dinner a letter from Lord

AN AIRSHIP WORLD'S FAIR.

tho eclenco of aerial navigation is
borne in powerfully upon us by a
world's fair exhibiting tho progress
of airship construction and manip
ulation, which has opened at Frank
fort-on-thc-Main and will last 100
days. In September tho crowning
feature of the show will bo tho ar
rival of Zeppelin II. for a series of ex
hibition flights.
A million and a half has been spent
on tho buildings and grounds where
upon will bo held contests between
airships, balloons and dirigibles.
Kvery type of flylnr machine will bo
shown. Prizes aggregating about

ternationale I,uftsrhlffahrt Austel
lung, mercifully shortened to Ila,
which Is tho name of the latest and
most Interesting of world's fairs.
Passengers may take joy rides In'
balloons and Bteerablo vessels of tho
air, and a liberal education in the art
of aviation is promised in tho read
ing of a series of papers by tho lead
ing experts. There are twelve groups
of exhibits: Balloons and balloon
manufacture, motor balloons, military
airship navigation and artillery, bal
loon signal service, production and
compression of gas, tho science of
aerial navigation, mechanical and
physical apparatus, equipment, mo
tors, art objects and toys. Various
competitions, aside from tho actual
races, will bring forth tho best in tho
specialized phases of the art.
Germany expects fully G, 000, 00ft
visitors to go through the gates of
the 11a In tho period of tho exhibition.
