Rural Telephone Connections
Hancock Citizens May Soon Talk Over |
Telephones,
One of the most earnest, enthuastlc,
and business-like mass meetings w it
nessed in a long time was held b.v <-iii- j
zens of the town and county in the
Court i louse last Friday night.

gan to direct attention to the situa
tion and tendencies in the county with

turn of these powerful agencies' many
of our citizens both in town and coun
try have begun to think and plan. As
a result it was suggested by a few pro
gressive in en that a mass meeting be
held to discuss and consider these mat
ters of public concern. The announce
ment was made that a meeting would
be held in the Court House Friday
night for this purpose. Everybody
approved the suggestion, and a large
number met promptly at tho hour ap
pointed. The meeting quickly or
ganized by electing Mayor J. D. Bur
nett chairman, and Mr. L. C. Miller
Secretary. The purpose of the meet
ing was stated by Hon. W. II. Bur
well who also enumerated many of the
advantages that would nccrtje to the
entire county by connecting up the
farm homes throughout the county by
h system of rural telephone lines
focused at the central in .Sparta, ami
thus putting practical ly the entire
population of the county in instant
communication with all the phone sys
tem In town ind with each other.
Several others spoke along the same
lines and Sup't. Weave, of the Bell
Telephone Company, explained the
cost of such lines and their manner of
operating. Plans were suggested,
which, after full consideration were'
unanimously approved. These plans
contemplated encouragement and co
operation in building up lines through
out the county in such a systematic
way as will reduce the cost to a mini
mum and the efficiency to a maximum
of convience and usefulness.
For devising ways and means of car
rying these plans into execution, and
for the purpose of oo-oper^tlng with
(sections of the county desiring to avail
themselves of the benefit of sucn a sys
tem, a committee was appointed. This
cofTinnttee consists of J. I>. Burnett,
chairman, Robt. Holmes, W. II. Bur
well, Karle Wheeler, George White,
and M. L. Duggan. The committee
has already met with the greatest pos
sible encouragement from every source I
and it begins to look now like our citi
zens who have so long neglected im
portant public utilities means to give
to Hancock county the best organ
ized system of rural telephones in mid
dle Georgia. Progressive communi
ties in the county will do well to con
sult with this committee promptjy,
and by such a spirit of oo-operation as
has so far manifested itself almost
anybody In the conuty may soon have

certificates. The law is plain on thi*

vent much annoyance later.

The faculty will be made up from
Wofford College, Converse College,
the Spartanburg city Schools, and
other institutions in the State.
A circular will be issued, giving an
outline of courses, the names of the
faculty, and other necessary informa
tion.
From the following outline of policy
and purpose may bo gained some idea
of the school and the lines along
which it will bo developed:
J. To offer in tho State ap opportu
nity to teachers to prepare themselves
for increasingly efficient work in com
mon schools.
2 To aid in equipping taachers for
high school work.
3 To enablo the inexperienced grad
uates of colleges, who intend to teach,
to profit by the instruction and expe
rience of practical teachers in the high
school branches.
4 To keep up the work already so
well begun bv former State Summer
Schools of bringing the teachers of
the State together for exchange of
opinion and experience, for the stlfhu
lus and enlargement of personal and
intellectual association, and for the
development of a professional spirit
and unity.
5 To develop courses looking to
tho degree of L. 1., and to offer cours
os toward tho degree of A. 13. This
will be done by lengthening tho term,
by gradually adding other branches
and advanced courses in the funda
mental culture and professional stud
lea, by outlining work to bo done In
the interval between summer schools.
6 To enable ow- teachers to uuite
with the foregoing opportunity and
advantages, the benefits of rest, recre
ation, and social Intercourse in the
fine summer climate o! tho near-moun
tain country. .
