various pending measures resisted the
wish of the majoritiy to dispose qt

A variety of subjects occupied the
atteutioo of the Home of Kepresenta
tives Wednesday, The ptaoeediugs
began with the adoption of the spec
ial committee report recommendinv

the recent speech of Mr. Willett, of
New York, deuuneiatory of President
HoOsevelt.
The postofflce appropriation bill
was amended in several particulars,

dent*, clerks, etc., of stations from
(ho CI ,000 to the $1,100 class, while
the provision for tho payment of
necessary expenses of division super1
intendents, railway mail clerks, and
others, while away from headquarters

priation of over $234,000,000.
Tho omnibus claims hill was bo
foro tho Senate during almost all of
the session Thursday. Various amend
ments wero offered to the measure
and acted upon, the vote on an amend
ment to repeal the Tucker act under
which war claims are sent to the
court of claims being postponed until
Friday.
Senator Foraker gavo notice that
Friday ho would again call up his
bill for the reinstatement of the sol
diers of the Twenty-fifth Ilegiment
who wero discharged, without honor
on account of tho Brownsville, Tex.,
"shooting up" August 13th-14th,

general debato. Mr. Clark, of Flor
ida, argued for jury trials in lunacy
proceedings in the District of Colum
bia. Mr. Jenkins, of Wisconsin, pre
sented views holding to be unconsti
tutional the acts of the last session
of ConcresR in relation to the. issu
ance of restraining orders, injunctions
and contempts of courts; Mr. Perkins
of New York, favored a lowering of
the tariff; Mr. Gaines, of Tennessee,
attacked the so-called powder trust
and Mr. Reeder, of Kansas, spoke in
defense of the forest service.
The judiciary committee continued
its hearing in the case of Judge Hund
ley. of Alabama, in the Senate on
Saturday.
Further testimony was given out in
the case of the inquiry into the Ten
nessee Coal. Iron and Railway com
pany merger.
The Senate Democrats are planning
a ldibuster to prevent a vote in the
Brownsville case.
By voting an appropriation of
$.")00,000, the house of representatives
Saturday made liberal provision for
further experiments by the army,
with balloons and airships for use in
warfa re.

tion sought to encompass its defeat

Dog Saved Boy on Bobsled.
At South Norwnlk, Conn., when lit.
ilo George l'lunkett, nicknamed
"Buster," was abandoned on a rail
road crossing Tuesday afternoon, di
rectly in the path of the Pittsfleld
express, Irish, a neighbor's big dog,
grabbed the rope of the sled in his
teeth and eauily did what v.'as im
possible for the strength of the chil
dren. Ho pulled tho sled and "Bus

they found the big dog affectionately
