year was remarkable for a reduction
of t h h number of aliens entering the
United States. The total Immlgra
tlon for the year was 782,870, or
502,479 less than for tho year 1907.
By reason of an amendment to the
law, the report fdr tho first time far*
nlshcs figures which show approxi
mately the net lncrea?? in population
by Immigration. Tho figures indicate
that tho net. increase was 2-09,867.
Of the aliens admitted, 030,071 were
between the a gas of fourteen and
forty-four years. Of those admitted,
172,293 could neither read nor write,
and 2310 could read but not write.

were illiterate, a decrease of four per
cont, in comparison with 1907. Tho

Tho report shows that the enforce
ment of tho law relating to alien con
tract labor was unprecedently suc

arrested and expelled from the coun
try.
