Two Fires In Tho County
On Monday last about 3 o'clock
the residence and barn of Mr. !v C.
Itose at Cantoy Hill were totally
destroyed by fire. Exactly at the
name hour the large residence at
Westvillo belonging to Cj?pt. L. L.
Clyburn and occupied by Rev. W.
S. Walters, was also destroyed.
It is not known how the lire origi
nated, but both aro supposed to bo
accidental. We learn that nothing
of Mr. Walters' household elfeols
were saved exoept a sewing ma
chine.

on the 30th and 31st of Muy with
tho Mizpah Baptist Church and
carried out the program as printed
in your valuable paper with the
exception of the one referring to
benevolence which we did not havo
time to consider owing to enthusi
asm aroused by the other subjects
discussed. There was especial em
phaeis lain on the great importance
of awakening a groatcr missionary
zeal anjong the laymen of our as
sociation and to the subject of in
doctrinating our people in the great
fundamental truths of Ihe Bible,
especially in tlioso that are dis
tinctive to our denomination.
We belike the Sunday School
cause was advanced by timely
talks in the mass meeting held on
Sunday morning in the interest ol
this work and the powerful denun
ciation of the parents for their neg
lsot to bring up their, children in
tho fear and admonition of the
Lord by their lives and conversa
tion by Bro. Peterson can not help
having a telling effect on those
who hoard his drastic sermon.
Tho Union was lavishly enler
tainod by the good poople of Mi*
pah and we' will not soon forget
our pleasant stay in their midst.

Abbeville delegation will join the
Special at Hodges and special cars
from Anderson will be attached to

This arrangement will enable vet

the State, also from Camden and

noon train in time to leave on the

W Hampton Cobb, as a candidate
for Solicitor of this Circuit. The
name of Mr. Cobb is familiar to a
great many Kershaw people, as he
wan formerly a correspondent to the
Camden papers from West Watoree,
and a brief mention of h is life will
not be a mias
Wade Hampton Cobb was horn
thirty-one years ago at Messers Mill,
which is near the county line and a
bout half way between Camden and
Colombia, He attended the beat
schools then availablo in his commu
nity, and for a while the famous
Richland and Kershaw county Joint
School ? English Knob, or Shady
Grove ? when Mr. Uowoll Morrell
was its prinoipal He afterwards at.
tended a privato school in Columbia
taught by that veteran teaober, "Prof.
James R. JTeyward, and then took
the special teachers' oonrse at the
South Carolina College. This com
pleted his literary education. IIu
waa then elected principal of the
Mount Pleasant school, which is one
of the best and biggest schools in
the central portion of H'chland,
and served that school for five con
secutive years, declining ro election

mental and mortal development oT
his community and aided very ma'
tonally in the organization of de
bating societies and Sunday School

terwards moved ^o Columbia and
begun the pr^ctico of law.
In 1002 ho became a candidate for
Judge of Probate, and after a warm
campaign wis elected by a hand
some majority; hie services there
proving satisfactory he was re elect

office, Mr. Cobb has found lime to
continae the practice of law in the
Coorts, and stands well as one of the

Bo it ordained, by the City Council of
r tie City of Camden, S. from and af
ter the passage of this Ordinance :
1. That if shall bo unlawful for any

to cause to be placed or deposited, on iny
of the parks, streets or sidewalks <?i toe

or any decaying animal or vegetable mat
ter or any filth or sweeping* of resilien
ces, stores, office* or other buildings, or
any wante paper, straw, buy. broken
glass, tack, piece of tin or metal of any
kind whatever, which in the opinion of
the Mayor or City Council may be a nui
sance, or which may endanger pedestri
ans or those who travel in vehicles
2. That all trash, filth, garbage or '>th
er matter mentioned in the proceeding
section, hhall be so placed upon the prem
ises of the ptoperly owners from time to
time that the same may be conveniently
taken from said promises by the agents
or representatives of the City of Cnmden.
3. That any person violating the pro
visions of this Ordinance shall upon con
viction be fined in a sum not exceoding
twenty dollars i$20.00) or bo imprisoned
for a period not exceeding ten 1. 10) days,
in the discretion of tl?e Ueoorder of the
City of Camden.
4. That all Ordinances or parts of Or
