llit- settlement of Camden is an ob !
I M'ure subject, llt<- (Oily data being thai -j
, i \lmiucd from volume; of forgotten lore i
{ and the old land grunts ami deeds found
in the State House. In 1 7:W King George
II of Knghmd instructed Governor
> Johnson, of iMitilh Carolina, to mark out
i plo t's in a proper .situation for eleven
I townships, uiii' especially ordered "to he
located on the Hlver Watery," the
i>ai<l township to contain a town "contigu
ous to the river and to consist of so mail)
lots and of such quantity of laud us you
judge convenient." (London Colonial
I Manuscript, Secrctim of State's oilice,
l/Vol. X \, p. JO >.)
[ According to these instructions James
,St. Julien, between December lillli,
and February -, 1734, laid off the town
ship of l''r<-<lcrick*hurg, nuined in honor
of the l'rinee of Wales This j>lal lias
survived the vicissitudes of lime and is a
most interesting rejic. It is upon cloth,
is mostly legible, and inscribed upon it
are the names of "Sander's Creek ' and
("I'ine Tree Creek"? names retained untyl
I lie present t ime, the latter being his
toric, insomuch as the old ''Catawba
Path" crossed this creek on a large nine
log. The purpose of these i townships
was to attract colonists frohv. abroad, but
I he inducements could not have been
sufficient, for in 17iJ5 Thus. Brown, an
Indian I radei , in a petition to the Gov
ernor, speaks of his faintly as being
'among the few inhabitants "in that re
mote pint of the country." The first
landowners in the vicinity of Camden bet
tied on the west side of the riVc.r, but in
17:17, from the number of acres granted
(fifty acres being allowed each person),
we fmd twenty-one persons in Lredericks
hurg township, Using within hailing dis
tance of each other, but too far away
ami too few to resist the hostile attacks
of the Indians, one whole family being
murdered on line Tree Creek.
During the. next few years the strug
gling colony was augmented by the ar
rival of about fifty persons, but of
these only three families owned n foot
of land in what are now the corporate
limits of the town, the others being at
tracted by llic "deadly" fertility of the
river bottoms.
Life was indeed strenuous in those
days, twef accounts found in the State
records telling of constant alarms from
the Chcrokces, "families leaving their
habitations and betaking themselves to
the forts,"-? the very crops being in
jeopardy,? "one party working While the
other guards them," and finally petition
ing the Governor to send more ammuni
tion to "enable us to. defend ourselves
and mir families against these heathens,
who threateneth our present destruction.
Without it (if attack!) we must fall a
sacrifice to their heathen fury." When,
