Another hot war in on between
Governor Ansel and Superintend
ent of Kduoatlon O. H. Martin, the
cause being that the Governor has
again made' an appointment upon
the State Hoard of Education
without consulting Mr. Martin.
The law does not way that the Gov
ernor shall consult tho Superinten
dent in making these appointments
hut as a mutter of policy it is de
sirable that the Hoard shall work
in harmony with the Slate Super
intendent. Mr. Martin thinks
that he has been / very unjustly
dealt with by the Governor and
lias written him a very caustic let
ter, the last paragraph of which
we givo below :
"As you perhaps know,you have
next year the appointment of the
remaining members of the Stale
board of education, with the ex
ception of the secretary, who holds
the position ex-ofllcio us State Su
perintendent of Kducation, and I
have the supreme satisfaction of
knffwing that I do not have to sit
with them nor be hound by their
actions. I /wish to give you the
pleasure of knowing here and now
that 1 shall not bo a member of
that board any longer than is nec
essary for me to discharge my du
ty and obligations to the people
of South Carolina. For two term*
I have been elected State Superin
tendent of Kducation without op
position. I have disciiarged my I
duties fearlessly and vigorously. I
fee! the satisfaction of having dom
some good for my people. I shall
not ask for re-election. I mention
this In order that you may indulge
and cherish the fond hope of get
ting a satteilito of your own ilk. I
am somewhat. In the position of the
old negro woman who went into a
dry goods store ami asked for three !
yards ( f red rihhon. The clerk
was very bow-legged. He started
across the store and said: '?Walk,

Mr. Martin's position may lie
right, but wo do not think ho isju*

timent for prohibition has been
steadily growing for the past sev?
oral years, not onlv in thin State
but throughout the South and
West. It is tuy deliberate judg
ment that the people of this Slate
desire a prohihitoty law, and that
public senliment is such tl.at it
can and will he enforced. Heliev
ing this, and being anxious to aid
in every way that I can to pro
mote tho best interests or our peo
ple, I shall certainly advocate a
prohibition law."

beautifies the front yards, cleans up the back yards and
otherwise makes this town a better town to live in.
The General Progress Committee is the Unofficial
Town Booming Comrrittee. It really ought to be organ
ized and made official. Let all of us work together for
the advancement of the town we live in, and there will be
more room around new excavations for the fellows at
work to throw out the dirt.
