Chicago.---The conclusion of the
(seventh annual business statement
compiled by tin; Commercial National
Hank of Chicago from M?e reports of
110,000 correspondents In all parts of
the country, just made jpublllc, is that
legitimate business interests through
out the country uro prosperous and
sound; only the purely speculative
markets uro feeling the effects of
money tension and stagnation, in
part the report says:
"The overwhelming preponderance
of evidence in that the business situ
ation Ik sound and satisfactory. Not
one of the thoiiHiutds of replies nega
tives this conclusion in definite terms.
That there has been a marked easing
down from the tension of the spring
and winter months of the year Is
generally admitted, but it Is admit
ted without a trace of regret or mis
giving."
In regard to money, it goes on to
sa y:
"Th? bankers of tho country, with
fow exceptions in the Far West, re
port an extraordinary demand for
funds in all lines of business activ
ity. Interest rates are Arm every
where, and in the central reserve
and larger reserve cities tho inquiry
tor funds so much exceeds the supply
that money is described ns 'tight.'
The range of our investigation Justi
fies the conclusion that bank deposits
show a straight, average Increase of
14.2 per cent., against a similar aver
age increaso of 10.X per cent. In the
loans. Tho averages, weighed ac
cording to the relative magnitude of
the totals, would probably show a
closer correspondence between tho
growth of deposits and loans."
The report continues:
"Business is generally reported to
br? good in volume, making an excep
tion for the great hesitancy in the
metal market, especially In copper
and tho alloy metals. Voluntary
concessions in the prices of these
Materials have made buyers wary
and they are generally waiting In tho
hope of further forced declines.
? The Iron and steel industry is go
ini; ahead under the pressure of or
ders previously booked for fall de
livery, but it Is conceded that, tho
current, inquiry Is lighter, leading to
the shading of prices in pig and 1)11

A'?:'errint? to (he crop situation, It
sa>s: "Our replies on schedules
touching the crop financing opera

and quality those defects, in conjunc

will require practically as large a
volume of funds as last year."
