Mrs. Mary A. Shannon was torn in
the ease and luxury of ante bull urn
ihiys. Left after the war a widow.1

she arose, like so many oilier of our
noble Southern woman, grandly t?>
the occasion. Fitted by education
at old Harharaville for the work of
teaehiog, she started, in 1873, a
private school for girls at her reei-'
denes in Ksrkwccd. Though lue
remuneration for such work at that
time was nefteasarily sipall, this
onterpiise flourished greatly. When
the foundations were laid here by
Profontor Schoenberg, io 1881, for,
tho aubsi qucnt graded school eyatem,
Mrs. Shannon was asked to mor^e
her school in the public snhools of
Camden and to accept the position
of first lady assistant teacher. TVr
she ooncluded to do and from tba
day to this has continqsd the honor
ed lady principal (if we may use the
.expression) of our city pchools.
