Perhaps the greatest enemy of
the American youth in the ciga
rette, that sapB the energy and
vitality from the body and finally
leaves the smoker nothing less than
a physical as well as a moral wreck.
It is a surprising fact and one
deeply to be deplored, that the ciga
rette ti ah . ...on nm li a hold on
American bays and men. Th<?\
former use it, doubtless, to appear
mannish ; the latter, because no long
addicatcd to the habit, they cannot
be released from its grasp. Is if
to bo that rugged manhood so
characteristic of the American na
tion, will eventually be a thing of
the past?
We denounce cigarette smoking
bocause it stunts developeraent ; it
robs ouo of his finer instincts; it
destroys the power of reason and
does not permit a perfect con
centration of the mind it demoralizes
The young man who is an
(habitual cigarette smoker is com
mitting a crime against hiscountrv
as well as against himself. It
impairs the faculty to ouch an ex
tent he loses all ambition and noble
aspirations, lie is robbed of hiu
energy and hence his back is turn
ed to the road to success and he be
.couias a horrible failure. Like the
eater ? and some factories#
soak their cigarettes in opium ? the

flows others to do the planning, the
aoting, the reaping of the reward ;
work to him is a druggery ? life is
devoid of interest.
Like the drunkard, as one drink
creates a passion for another; so
one cigarette to the smoker, excites
a craving for one moro. There is
nothing that can take its place; he

strange; uncanny world, unless
that white roll is between his lips.
Appetite is lost; there is a yearn
ing for something indefinable; the
mind fails to act ? in many eases
insanity Is the result.
Then too oigaretto smoking leads
to crime. A magistrate in New
York City has said that 09 out of
100 boys between the n^es of 10 and
17 who come before him charged
