The work of the lire fighter# wii* not
in vain. Itoaring across the hloekt of
San Francisco's lnind--ouiest dwellings .
the lire reached Van Ness avenue and
there paused at the last defense that
could be made against it. The con

spent its I'oree, after h. ng waste the
entire business part of the city, the
finest residence section, and the tene

is safe. The tin men wore stopped at
Van i Jobs avenue and \Oclavla street

With tiie fire under 6ntrol. the chief
concern was for the homeless and
famishing, estimated to number

Three main relief stations have been

The military were eoa elled to im

number is still tin know n.
The insurance companies anaouneed
that losses would be ] id immediately,

Put the people of San Francisco,
homeless and famishing, are bravely
facing the calamity which has over
taken them, and praet ie.iily swept oil L

Now and. then, you recognize some
man, dressed like a tramp, dirty, drag

There are well authenticated stories

There is a dnrk* side, too. At least
four men have boon shot for looting.
There are no wharf rats in the world
worst than those which infest the San

afternoon one of the*e cattle came
staggering out of a wine house on
