Death of Hev. A. J, Stokes.
Rev. Stokes, who (or sever*
al years wm pastor of the Metho
dist Church in Camden, and also
for a nuber of years Presiding El
der of the Sumter district, died at
Greenwood on the 18th lost. Hla
remains were brought to Camden
and interred here on Saturday last.
The following notice of his death
appeared iu the State of last Sat
urday ;

the South Carolina Methodist Con
ference, died here this morning at
9 o'clock as a result of the paralyt
ic stroke which oatne upon him
Tuesday evening while he was at
tending the session of the investi
gating committee in the ease of Rev.
C. W. Oreigjiton, editor of The
Christian Appeal,
Dr. Stokes was at once removed
to the borne pf Rev. M. B. Kelly at
the Medodlsl parsonage. Medical
aid was given immediately but be
never rallied Mrs. Stokes was
summoned from Allendale and was
here when the end esrpp,
Rev. Andrew JucLsoa Slok<*? was
born in Colleton county, August
25, 1830, arid was therefore in his
00th year. He received hi* preparas

colleen and was graduated from
that institution in 1859. He was

M. from Woft'ord. lie whs licensed

was superannuated at the last con*
j ferenoe In Spartanburg, December,
1905. Uutll that lime be had been
in the regular work as a pastor with
the exception of a brief period when
he waa a professor in the Spartan
burg Female college. Dr. Stokes
served many important paatoratca
and was presiding elder for the full
term of both the Mar. on and Sumter
districts and also the Charleston
district. He served also 85 ysara
as a trustee of the Columbia Female
college. He waa the ohlef agent in
founding tbe Kpworth orphanage
and served as president of its board
of managers. He also served as
preaident of of lbs legal ooaferenoe
of tho South Carolina ooaferenoe.
