A Pouble Affliction.
Mention was made in The Chron
icle last week of the tragic death of |
Mr. Chalmers Horton at Kershaw.
On Thursday last just one week
from the' day Mr. Horton was killed.
Mr. and Mrs. Hortou's little son, one j
year old, died of ppeijiponia. The
greatest sympathy is felt for Mrs.
Horton in her doublo affliction.

Mr. J. R. Hill, of Alcolu, Sumterj
oounty, a brother-in-law of Mrs. Dr.

Wreck on the Seaboard.
A very disastrous wreck accured
on the Seaboard railroad last Tues
day morning four miles beyond
Blaney by a passonger train and a
freight train colliding. Four per
sons were killed and three were in
jured. Ttye dead are : A. A. Srneck,
engineer, /and Will White, the col
ored fireman of the freight train,
both of whom lived in Hamlet, aBd
Postal Clerks H. A. Patillo of Os
tern, Fla., and M. C. Walkins of
Putnam Hall, Fla. Those injured
are: John Robertson, the engineer,
and Dan Douglas, the colored fire
man, of the passenger train, both
from Raleigh, and Expiess Messen
ger D. ?. Hinton. i
The freight crew had been on
duty for more than 25 hours, and
when the Florida Special passed
them, the engineer, who had been
asleep, awoke and inquired of the
freight brcakman if No. 66 had pass
ed, and was informed that it had
passed. The flagman signalled the
train out on the main line, and they
left Hlaney at or near 6-45 o'plock. (
Tho operator at Blauevcame out of
the station as the freight was leav
ing tiO ask the conductor to have
some shifting done, but the train

operator went to his instrument and |
reported to the dispatcher at Co
lubia that the freight had left Bla
ney. The dispatcher replied that
No 66 had left Columbta and that
they would go^together. And the

No. 66 came down a high grade and
the freight came around a gbort

met at the bottom, in a out. It is
supposed that eaoh train was run
ning about ^ miles au hour.
Heroic Mr. Burroughs.
Qf those who lived through it all,
the negro fireman of the passenger
train had a most marvfelnua and
thrilling escape. ' He was hurled
forward from his cab and buried
beneath the moueter engine, held
down so fast on all sides that he
could not move, with the. boiling
water from tbo broken pipes pour
ing around him in scalding pools
and the gass tank of the oars not
ten feet away, whicft had taken fire
and was shooting out long tongnen
of flame. A* eoon as the first shook
of the accident had passed, passen
gers in the coaches ran forward to
aasist those in danger. Mr. W. L.
Burroughs, traveling passenger
agent of the ?>eaboardj who was a
passenger on tho tram, im with
another passenger, the firsVlo reach
the engines. They could hear the
cries of the suffering (lreraaq as he
begged' for help, but at first could
not locate bim. With buckets of
water caught from leaking tanks of
the tenders they kept the fire from
the gastanks from firing the wreck
and Mr. Burroughs climbed down
through the ma98 of wheels
and steel to extricate tho ne
gro from his dangerous and mis
erable position. It was found,
however, that the man was held
fast and could not be released.
Effort after effort was made by Mr.
Burroughs and his fellows, assisted
by a porter from one of the Pull*
to get him out, but with
our suocess. Finally a spade was
fotottd. and the embankment was dug
away ^ntl| a tunnel was cut to the
suffering fireman and the ground
under bia body was dug away so
that he could be lowered below the
pieces which held him. Straps
were then taken from trunks in the
baggage oar and buckled around
his body and Douglass was. pulled
out of danger by nam strength.
No passengers were injured.
