tho Ootton Growers' Association, at
first blush, appoara remarkable. One
of this Association's avowed objects
is to cause a roduotion in the amount
of fertilizers used by Southern cot
ton planters.
The fertilizer companies, however,
tako a broader and wiper view. The
Southern farmers arc their chief cos
tomers, not onlv this year, but in all
years. Unless they have ability to
bay, the fertilizer men cannot ex
peot t'? sell. The farmers are r t r i v
ing to gain the position whoro they
will havo a voioo in fixing tho price of
their commodity. Other producers
occupy suoh a position now and the
farmers boliovo that as a condition
precedent to reaching it, intelligent
restriction must bo placed about pro
duotion. The logic in this is irro
sistible.
Tho fertilizer companies under
stand further that tho education
movement implies no tight upon
them. Curtailing fertillizors bus no
Other object than to curtail the cot
ton crop of 1905. There is no dis
position to lessen the amount of for
tiliiers used for wheat, potatoes and
other crops.
Whde the fertilizer companies have
exhibited good business judgment in
ihris co-operating with the farmors,
they show a liberal spirit. They
make it olear that they keep in mind
their mutuality of interest with
Bonthern farmers and give to the
Utter assurance that tbey may be do
