Adjutant .and Inepector General of
the State, died in Columbia on
Christinas Day after a very short
illness of bronchial asthma. Mr
Watts wa? only about Ho yeais old
and wan the son of Capt. John VV.

when a bonfire was made of cotton on
thestroots of Fort Gianen. It is not
yot determined where it will stop.

South ('arolinn College.
The ceutenninl of the opening of
the South Carolina College will be
celebrated on tho lOih day of Jan
Mary, 1905- The oenteuuial of the
chartering of the college whs cele
brated December 19,1901, in Charles
ton, during tho Exposition. The
chief object of thie celebration, ah
emphasised at the lime, whs to lead
up to a worthy celebration of the
true centenuial of the life of the Col
1c ge in January, 1905, when it is
oxpected that hundreds of alumni
from all parts of tho couutry will be
present iu Columbia to Hignali/.e one
of the most notable events in the
history of the State.
The establishment of a State Col
lege, conceived by John Rutledgc,
was recommended to the Legislature
by Gov. John Drayton, In Novem
ber, 1801, and was carried success
fully through that body by H. W.
DeSaussure, afterwardn Chancellor,
and until his death, in 1889, a bul
wark (?f strength to the South Caroli
lia Co'lege.

century almost all the distinguish
ed men of the State aud many of
the leaders of the Southwest were
graduate* of tho South Carolina
jpdfiegr, Congressmen, Senators,
Judges,Governors. When the Wm

whether from South Carolin-i or
from other States, eighteen of her
tilnmni rose to the rank of general.
All know Hampton and Butler and
Mart Gary and John Hratton. T.
M. Logan and A. C. Haskell divided
the honors of the class of 1860, and
in less than four years commanded
i -regiments or brigades. The acade
