the people of pherokee county have
voted to give up the dispensary
profits and to tax themselves half a
mill in order to have prohibition.
Tbe profits la?l year are ?m<j to
bnve been $1,203.50 and it is esti
mated that tbe special tax will pro
duce $1,760, ao that the people of
Cherokee aro willing to pay $:!,()<><)

There was a contest in Greenville
county at the general election for
Ibe office of Supervisor, 8proegle
wae endorsed by tbe democratic ex
ecutive committee, hut Walker think
ing that the committe had acted
wrong, decided to run in the gener
al election, and received a miijoiity
of the votes. What the result of
this will be is hard to forucHut, but
it In beleived by many to be the be

Our farmers, notwithstanding tli*?
scarcity of labor, aro nearer done
gathering than Ihey usually nre ft l
this season of the year. Vet, as a
general thing, crops have been good,
an<l the snftter'sl condition of our
farmors, generully speaking, In per
haps 00 good or better limn it u?u
ally is. The scarcity of colored In
lor on farms is very much in evi
dence, a# compared willi twenty or
even ten yoars ago. Willi this change
has come n great change f? ?r Hie bet
tor in quality of labor, as ninny of
our farmers nre doing most of their
work themselves, ? hence ono grand
cause of the improvement in the
type of our labor.
In comparing the diameter of In
bor now and twenty years ?gn
brings to mind other things in which
there have been great change*, nota
ble among which is the grent im
provement in our mail facilities;
then there was one rnnil route lead
i.irg from J? fferson to Camden, m<?k
li'g one or two trips a week. But
now instead ot weekly business
those of us who are fortunate en
oiigh to live on the free delivery]
routes hayo our mail brought to our
doors every day. Tn this respect we
enjoy a convenience that even tunny
towns do not. Ami yet in many
parts of our county there is still
room for improvement which we
hope to aee made at an early day.
The quietness that characterized
the recent general election brings to
mind the great contrast between an
eleotion day now and ono about
three decades ago. Then we had
/negro mnnkgers of eleotion, were
crowded and jostled at the polls by
negroes led by whito carpet baggers
and scalawags, who elected from
their motley crew a gang of
O! the picture in too dark to dwell
n,H>n. But now we have, ns a rule,
efficient, honest and honorable uffl
" cials. True thero aro a few excep
tions, but exceptions only prove the
rule.
While in most departments we sec
a marked improvement, during the
last quarter of a century, yet there is
a'< least one department that suffers
in the comparison, ? that of many of
our public highways. True there is
?n Improvement in the comparative
ly few plnoes that the chain gang is
ab'e to reach. If we had the r i ? ? I > t
kind of laws properly executed our
highways would keep pace with other
improvements.
We are glad to note that, tho edu
oational advantages enjoyed by the
children of today arc far superior to
those tliat Existed twenty- five years
ego and they should duly appreciate
these opportunity by improving
them in every possible way.
