Vol.?9rmi*M Vows.
Two South Carolinians, now old
men, made vows, and so far, have
kept them. Itwasa matter of hair.
One of them was so much attached
to General Wade Hampton thai
when Mr. Tillman ousted him from
the Senate he vowed that he would
never cut his li h i r until redoubtable
Hnnjamin was himself, in turn, po
litically overthrown. That was
many yearn ago and the venerable
| colonel, whoso locks are still dutl<
and abundant, has tresses that. mnn\
women would envy. He has a Hull a
lo Hill aspect, but from present ap
pearances the bather will never put
scissors in those flowing locks.
Capt. W. S. Smith, of Clover,
York county, South Carolina, went
to Manassas 0? jfico how the militia
conducted themselves, Ha ||,l(|
fought in many real and bloody but
tles under General Lee. We are told
that ho was "fit both the llrst and
second battle of Manassas " 1 In de
clared at the beginning of i he haitb*
of the Wilderness that if the Con
federate soldiers were not ultimately
successful ho would not cut oil' hi*
beard again. He kept liis promi**!,
und tn-day he wears a beaul that'
extends several inches below tliri
waist of his trousers. " ?
Many vowh are made arid many ?
luokou, but here are two mhmi who!
k??pt/*heir oaths and will probably'
go to their graves in oonse?jui'ner,
the ono with the longest hair on his
head and the other with the longest
boird on his chin in all the world.
Sonalor rill man s denomination
gives no signs of waning. The
Confederate cause in practically
lost. Everything is said to come
to hiu) that waits, but it will hardly
arrive, as the veterans desired.
They will keep their vows and their'
hair ontact. Long may they wave!
