ary. The verdict was found on 12
counts out of the sixty-six, or those
churning abstraction and wliful mis
application of tin; funds of the bank.
Seven years ago to a day the First
National Hank of Asheville closed Us
doors. Such is the coincidence that
the closing day of a trial lasting for
17 years should have ended seven
years after prosecution and publicity
bi-gan to beat like a fierce white light

the wrecked bank. In a little more
than seven hours, tho verdict wan
returned. At 11.45 tho jury returned
to their box. Tho defendant and his
counsel being absent, they were im
mediately sent for, and sobn, Major
William K. Ilreese, the defendant, ac
companied by Judge C. A. Moore and
Mr. J. S. Adams, arrived in the Fed
eral Court room. This was a few
minutes pual twelve o'clock. At 12. 1~

utes later, Col. 11. C. Cowles, clerk o?
the court, asked in a solemn tone:
