KerBhaw Guards.
On Wednesday afteruoon the
Kershaw Guards went through one
of their regular drills on Monumen
al square. Lieut. Hough was in
charge during the first and laat
part of the afternoon. He marched
the company from tiiotr armory to
the drill ground at which place
Capt. Zeuip took charge. Guard
mounting was the ptinc.ipal feature
of the drill, Captain Zemp acting
aa Adjutant, Orderly Sergeant von
tresekow as Sergeant-Major, Lieut.
DeLoache, as Olflcer of the Guard,
Lieut. Hough as Officer of the Day,
and Privates McCreight, K. O, Jr;
Keuuedy, B. 0-, Jr. ; DuBose, A. P. ;
and Bnuu, D. II., as First Ser
geants. After guard mounting aud

company lutfdrued to the armory
where a smoker was given them by
Captain Zemp.
Slayer of Capt. P. W. Dawson
Found Dead In Bed.

Charleston, Jnly 26 ? Dr. Thou?as
McDow, the slayer of Capt. F. W.
Dawson, lato editor of the Nena and
Courier, was fount} dead in bed at
his residence onx Kutledge avenue
this morning, having; been dead since
probably Saturday night or Sunday
morning, judg/ng from the state of
decomposition of the body. Dr. Mc
Dow'a wife and daughter were in the
mountains anl he had been oooupy
ing 1 he house alone, which nconuntp
for tlio long time that elapsed be
tween his death and the finding of
his b)dy.
The discover}' of tho dead body
was made by J O. McDow, a stable
man. cousin of the decoi.sed, w ht> was
notified thin morning about 8 o'clock
by Dr. McDow'e negro boggy driver
tli.it he had nol seen the doctor since
Saturday and wae fearful that some
thing had happened to him. When,
tlio negro failed to see the doctor
yesterday ho concluded that ho had
taken a run out of the city, but find
ing the bouse shut up again thiii
morning, after attending to ?bo horse
und stable ho notified the cousin of
the dead man. McDow forced open
the door of tho house and then on
tored the bedroom, to find tjho doctor
dead. .The room was in an orderly
condition. Tho mosquito net had
been carefully tucked in around the
mattress, tyr. MoDow'a clothes wore
Inid on a chair nctir bis bed and a
p?tcher of water and a glass stood on
a tablo by the bed. Tho body wa?
on its back, with the arms carefully
thrown oyer the chest. There was
no evide&fce -f>f any struggle and It
looked as though death had peace
fully and Suddenly corao to him.

considered unnecessary on acconoi of
Dr. McDow having been under treat*
ment for heart disease.
