then got off. This suspicious action led

Negro Killed.
Kershaw, Special.? Last Thursday
an altercation took place between Mr.
Lewis M. liorton, who lives just north
of Korshaw, and Charlie Brown, col
ored, in whjch the latter was shot
with a pistol, the ball entering tlio

spinal column, from tho effects of
which h? died Saturday afternoon.
Drown was a tenant on Mr. Iiorton, s
place and without cause left his crop
without providing any way to have it
worked. Mr. Iiorton was trying to in

ner Caskey, of Lancaster, conducted
the Inquest, while Drg. Halle and
Braslngton held the autopsy. The
verdict of tho Jury was that "Hrown

Mr. Iiorton while protecting his life."
It Is a clear case of self-defense, as
Brown was in close range of Mr. Ilor*
t?n and was in the act of throwing
an axe when Mr. Iiorton shot. Mr.
Iiorton will surrender to Sheriff Hun
ter at Lancaster.

Chesterfield, Special.- ? On Monday

was passing the switch at Thompson's
siding, about six miles from here, the

ly, but as they were going very alow

had been tampering with-it, and not
being able to break the lock they lmd
taken out a bolt, and If the train had
been going much faster It might have
been a serious accident. A reward
has been offered for the party or
parties who tampered with the switch,
and If caught they should be severely
punished. Owing to the accident the
passengers for Charleston were car
ried to Hennettsvllle, and from there
to Charleston.
