The State in a recent editorial
expressed certain views concerning
public schools similar to what we
have entertained aud made public
for several years.
The State affirms that there is
dissatisfaction witli tho system
both in tho north and in tho south.
The work is superficial and spreads
instruction "over all creation and
wot over six inylwjs deep in any
place."
We have *aid beforo this that n
wiiole generation of children haw
been ruined by the modern system
of cramming. Too many hooks are
required and teachers of this day
assign lessonH of such length us to
be beyond human capacity. Spell
ing is neglected and few are taught
to read or write correctly. The fad
about vertical handwriting has done
irreparable injury to thousands of
young people.
Every editor in this Statu knows
the insufficient training their cor
respondents generally have lind
from their etyle of composition.
This deficiency cornea from lack of
thorough instruction in the elemen
tary branches.
The north is returning to few
books and thoroughly training and
the south should not be behind in
this movement. The first step
should be to employ teachers who
have some common sense and judg
ment and who will lie qualified and
willing to explain and teach in-,
stead of merely hearing recitations.

February 1st, they will bo in a position to furnish any style
