Tho Chai lesion road now crosses the creek nearer tho river than tlu crossing above referred to, aud con --eequontly when this river rises to any great extent the road is Hooded by back WaJ^pr from the NVateree river and is rendered impassable. Although the road has been raised from time to time at great, expense, it was determined, in or der to escape an much back water, .to construct a crossing higher up the creek. This city is one of the most beautiful in the south. anil is rapidly growing now. The buitdinga are l?? and f oiuo magnificent, altogether n ? r* U _ ing il a very pleasant ouo to stay in. Wo enjoyed our stay in this beautiful old eity very much and it wan with re grot that we left it. All tho lands we were now passing through wore beautiful with acres of rir.o fields, for the land is very rich and nlmoBt all of the fanners are wealthy. Here and there were orange grows and fields of sugar-cane. Leaving Louisiana wo came to Texan. On and on through tho prairies of Texas t!u,? train rushed ; we were passing through a country that way entirely new to us ; hero a field of beautiful green grass, there a fiold of cotton, corn or wheat. Often we passed a large cattlo ranch. Through the desert lands of southern New Mexico and Arizona wo went, and on reaching the hoendary between Ari. zona and California we ramo to a wonder ful sight, tlio grand canon of the Colo rado River. which has been made by tho river cutting down through the rocks. At Inst we roach southern ''California. This region ??' one of the most beautiful in the United States. The vegetation is almost tropical The flowers are very brilliant in color nod *erv large, and tbeir perfume is heavy l arge orange groves are shell nearly everywhere . 1 .os Angeles is situated in this garden s| ot. On we go through forests of very large trpos, and at hist co'iie to fc'iter.v mento, the capital, ?rom which we go to ^an Francisco. Considering how short a time it has been since gold was dis covered out hero ami the West opened up for tiavel. the growth of the cities and towns is wonderful | Sun Francisco is a very interesting J city, and b is many attractions.
