The right of trial by Jury wan ojict
one of our bulwarks of Justice, but
it is now brooming ho diverted and
perverted llint only tho shadow of
what it onco was remains. This
has been twice exhibited in this
county recently by the netting aside
of tho verdicts of Juries by tho pre
siding judges and substituting a
verdict of their own. The cases
to which we refer are tho Boyd and
Thomas cases, vs. tho 8. A. L
While not fttmiliar with the law
ii such instances, yot we presume
tii/3 presiding Judge in each case
did nothing more than he had tho
lega! right to do.
But it in this feature of tho mat
er thaj^wo wish especially to em
phasize. This fnice of having n
caso to go before a Jury, when
virtually their vcrdict means ~nn
thi n tE without the presiding judge
elects not to interfere. If the ver
dict of a jury ia to?*-meau nothing,
why go to. the i rouble and expense
