A Letter From W. F. M.
j No. 2.)
Pardon me gentle reader, I know
tho q uestions you wiah to ask, but
he patient, we'll get to that point.
In a little while. Then I will tell
you all about tho Filipinos, their
customs, huhiLs, mode of living, etc.
Came out of tho crecl^i^K.,
kept off the cold with lijjomo qui
nine tablet*, and am now ready to
?'couple on" to my last week's let
ter, and proceed forthwith to tbi>
town of Catbalogan, Samar, whore
tho gun-boats "Helena" and "Nash
ville" wnro bombarding tho plane.
A tier ceasing iii? iirvw m ?MUw j ,
the small boats were lowered, and a
landing wan made by the 4Mrd Vol
unteers. One American wih killed
and one wounded. Tho insurgents
sefc (Ire to tho town before leaving
i'; tho aoJdior boya had to fight
lire and watch the enemy' atlhV
same time, but they succeeded in
keeping the fire from spreading,
and drove the enemy in the hills ?
very lii^h hill* surrounded thin
town on throo Hides, which gave
the enemy a deoided advantage, but
with nl! tho vnntugo ground, their
ancient cannon didn't prove very
efFcctive.
The next day Moj. Allen, with
three companies of tho llird ln
fantrv, pursued Lukbun, who had
taxed^he natives and had accumu
lated *100,000 in gold, to the moun
tain fttntneHH. About $'.1,000 ene
my's money whs captured at this
place. A part of tho 43rd Regi
ment, and one section of our Moun
tain battery waa also Jeft there.
Our next stop was at tho small
tow h of Ortuok. A bont wan scut
tiflhore from the ^Nanhvlllo," re
porting everything quiet, and tho
natives HoomWigly frioudly. No
troops were then put aulioro at this
point, they being a "small fry,"
1 guess unclo Sam thought he could
gather them in hia uut later on.
Taoloban, Leytc waa our next de;

bi>ing of heavy draught, we could
not go through the shallow chan
nel between Samar and Ley to, so
we Hailed nearly around the island
of Levte to reach Taololmn, Ther*
the two gu U-boats shell**! tl?o towg,;
and soon hud the natives on the go.
They hud ihe audacity to begin Rome
breastworks near the water-front,
bvit they proved to he of very littli i
service to them. Tho 2nd section
of the Mountain buttery, the one tc
which I belonged, went ashore a>
this point. Found tho town de
sorted except by a few Chitv
"Hquattcra" and some English reai
dents. Tho Chinee always had an
eye to business. They would fol
low up or precede tho army of oo
cupalton, and when tho inhabitants
of a town would leave on the ap
proach of the American troops,
which they almost invariably did,,
the Chine would tako possession,
hoping, no doubt, that the former
occupant might get killed or never
return to claim their property'.
Our first night in this town i*
where wo hegau to got a taste of
warfare. It was a very daik night,
we had the corral guard and you
could hardly hoo your hand before
you, and our i ieket lino ran nearly
a bundled yards in a thicket. I,
admit my flesh was a little "creepy"
at limes that night. Had much
rathsr fsco ballets In tho day time
than an enemy with a knlfo at night.
In a day or so the natives began -to
return to town, when they learned
that tho soldiers would not molest
them as long as they were friendly.
Our location was not a very safe
oue, a? wo wero statlonod on the
outskirts of town, and no guard but
our own, Vmt the town was not at- j
tacked w'.iilo we weie thoro (only!
remaining thoro about three weckn)
but thoy afterwards mado the
Americans vaoato tho town for a
short time only. On Fob. 2:ird we
shook tbo dust of Tacloban off our
feet and boarded the S. S. "Aeolus,"
on which, was Gen. Kobb's head
quarters, our Captain at that time
was serving as Inspector-General
on his ststF. This boat was not
so well provided with staterooms, ,
and our quarters were on deck,
with a tropical rain pouring through
the canvas, making our lota very!
"wet one." The next morning we
stopped at Malytboo, Leyte, and 24 1
men and 1 oftlccr of the 43rd In
fantry went ashore to garriaon the
town. There waa a email coasting
eteamor there loading with hemp,
but when the natirea aaw the sol
diers coming aehore, It waa a eight
to see them with their small ban
dies running up the beach na faat
as their little brown lege could oarry
them. Tbey soon returned whan
they found that the soldiers would
