SHORT LOOAL ITEMS
The two trees in front of the Gilt

Zemp A- Del'ass dm# store was a

The election returns from Columbia
wore received there and crowds
thronged this popular store until far
into the night.
We are told of an old lady, whose
residence is so situated, that just by a

tho Loo county line. The old lady,
in lots of trouble, begged that the

she said was that fhe had learned

That Historical Trowel.
The historical trowel which was
fust used by LaFayetto in laying
the corner stono of tho Dekalb
monument here and which has been
used on several important occasions
has again been brought into ser
vice. It Vhs Utted in Y o%kville last
week in laying tho oornef stone of
the new graded school building.
Speaking of tho time-honored trowol
the Yorkville Yeoman says:
"Colonel Barron held up to the
view of the audience an ivory
handled silver trowel that the
grand lodge had aent along to be
used in these ceremonies. It was
of especial interest because it had
been made for the use of Marquis
do LaFayette, who was a Mason of
high rank in laying the corner
stone in the monument to Baron
DeKalb, at Camden, S. C., in 18*25.
It has boen used since on many
similar occasions; notably inlay
ing the cornerstones at Winthrop
anil Clcmson colleges. The tidce
and nature of the event is named,
for each, by a record printed on a
white ribbon attached to tho han
dle. Another ribhon will now be
added for the Yorkville graded
school."
