Possibly one of the saddest deaths

that of Mrs. W, T. Hammond last
Monday evening abont 7 o'clock.
She had not been sick long acd her

The Recent Hot Spell Not the Hottest
Every summer is the hottest, at
least that is the way it feels >o tie
man who Is sweltering, but the cold
facts, if snch temperature may be so
designated, show thai some seasons
are hotter than others, and particu
larly that tlio weather of last

records of tho local weather bureau

I8i7, 1H00, and Aujrugt 1900, nil had
longer continued periods of heat nod

than during last week. In June
1899, the hot weather set in early
with 07 degrees on the fith, followed
by 100, 102. 101. 103, 00, *02, but
on the 16th tlte temperature dropped
to about 90 degrees. In July of ?bo
same year, from tho 13th to i8th, in
clusive, the following consecutive
high temperatures were recorded :
98, 102, 105, 101. l'>3. 96. after
which the temperatures were still in
the nineties to the close of the
month. On the 19Mi of August,
1000, the thermometer went up to
