Mr. W. II. Smith's Killing Was an Ac
cident and not Suicide.
Mr. R. I'. Ftaekhouse on whose
place th^Jate W. H. Smith lived,
has requested that the following
statement he made in reference to
Mr. Smith's death :
Mr. Smith waq not in particularly
had health, he was not mclancholy
or despondent, he was not in seriouH
financial straits though in debt. his
*rop was not a failure, but on the
contrary was better at the time of |
his death than tho averaic crop this
year and better than had been made
on tho same laud last year. Mr.
Smith had not been threatening to
kill himaelf, but had merely talked
to hie wife about a friend v'who had
killed himself by taking laudanum
He did not borrow Mr. Stackhouse'*
gnu to protect himself in case he wan
attacked by a negro who was said to
I have made threats against hie life, ;
but to shoot a dog, and having kill
ed the dog, it is a natural inference
to believe that on the morning of his
death bo was on his way to return
it. Mr. Stack house and others who
examined the scene of his death
found whero Mr. Smith laid the pun
dowmacross the corn hods by tho
aide of tho path, walkod oil some dis
tance, and whore he returned, pick
fft'gf up'tBb' gun, it is supposed, by
tho barrtfl with his left hand started
to walk on, when tho hammers were
caught on a corn stalk and the gnn
discharged ? marks being found on
one of the stalks, mado probably, hy
tho hammer of the gnn. The load
entered the left side of the head,
back pf an ahovo the ear, blowing tho
whoTe top of the skull off.
Mr. Stackbouso says that he is,
and all others who have carefully ex
afulked the ground are, poricctly sat
isflecrthat the accident happened as
above stated, lie is also of thrf opin
ion that If the Coroner and jury of
.inqueet had made careful iuvrstiga
ition these facts wou'd have been es
tablished before the verdict warren*
deted. ^
It fe onfortcnatoly a fac' that, as
a rule, juries of inquest do their work
