never having seen a contest of this
nature before, their success is sim
ply wonderful.
In this contest the running *vhm
lowered one-firth of a second below
any record previously made In the
South, the honor of breaking the
record being due to the Palmetto
No. 2, of Columbia. The following
were the entries : l)elg:ir No. 3, of
Sumter, S. C. ; Charlotte No. 1 ;
Palmetto No. 2, of Columbia;
fioidsboro No. 1, Goldshoro ; Aslie

pany No. 1, Camden, S. C. ; Pioneer
No. 2, Charlotte; Independent No^
1, Colli ml)ia. The Southside of
Greensboro, had fifth position, but
failed to enter.
v To de'eat such tenuis as these
composed of experienced and veter
an fireman, up to every poiitf, >n the
content, certainly entitles our team
to high rank among the Uosetom
I panies of tho counti \ .
It would t>e unfair to attempt to
give extra credit to any one man,
Hi, admirably did all contribute to
our success.
We cannot conclude this short
account of the contest without re
ference to our faithful driver -'Rab
bit." When we are rwjoicing over
(?ur victory we should not forget
the trained eye and hand t.iat guid
ed the charging horses to victory.
It was said by all present that the i
streets of Charlotte never exhibited
a more exciting and skillfut feat of
driving than that displayed' by our
own? '?Rabbit." He. owned the
land before ii* leu, and it i? quite
certain that no persuasion on earth
could avail to-day to get him to ex
