Over tho New Road.
On Friday, May 11th, tho Wash
ington Street Methodist Sunday
school will run an excursion to Cam
den via the Seaboard Air Lino- This
will be the firbt Sunday school pic
nic of the season, and it will be the
first opportunity there has ever been
to carry a crowd of Columbians to
historic old Camden. It is said that
a very large crowd will go on this
excursion ? -State, 1st inst.
Tho boys are trying to arrange a
match gnme of base ball to be played
on that day. The Camden Graded
School will giro holiday. We under,
stand that Mayor McOcight will do
all he can to make the day a pleas
ant one for tho visitors.
A Fall.
Tho attraction of gravitation has a
potent influence on all terrestrial sub
stances. Tins influence was exerted
on a large lot of shoes which Messrs
Hirsch Bros. & Co. had stored away
on a shelf, in the Team store, now
occupied by tlicui. Tho shelf broke
and such a tall of shoes was seldom
ever witnessed However, no serious

A Crazy Printer Tries to Behead a
Boy.

day, while all others were out of the
office. II II. Gallaher, a printer, tem
porarily crazy, tried to cut tbe throat
of Miller Drakefofd, the 7-year-old
son of "the editor of The Ycfltnan.
The child was paying in the compos
ip? room. His mothor heard a scream

snatched him from the man and ran

the door. The little boy has a gash
on his neck an inch long, barely
missing the jugular vein. Gallaher
is in jail, and said if he had known
they were going to imprison him he

The death of Dr. Todd calls to
mind history, lie was a member
of the Todd family, of Kentucky,
and brother of Mrs. Lincoln, wife
of l'res. Abraham Lilcoin. When
the war commenced, he espoused
the Southern cause and became a
full Surgeon in the Confederate
army. About the close of thu wai
he was connected with a hospital
in Camden, where he married a
Miss Matlio Lyles, daughlor of
J as. V. Lyles, Kscp, and sister of
M id. Dr. Hugh es.
His only son, (leo. Todd, Jr., now
of Colorado, accompanied his fath
er, 9 remains from 1} unwell. To
this young man especially, we ex
tend our heartfelt sympathy in his

Sunday night we gathered the fol
lowing interesting facts ; Ai meuia

Turkey and Persia, and has a pop
ulation of three and one-half mil
lions. The Armenians however
are scattered all over the earth,
hence the lecturer termed them

aro here, as at home, peaceable and
law-abiding people. Armenia
claiips the honor of having been
the site of the Garden of Kden, be
ing traversed by the Tigris and
Kuph rates rivers. Noah's Aik

very proud. As to religious cus
toms, the people are great church
goers, though there are no seals or
windows in the churohes. The peo
ple sit^on the church floor, the wo
men in the galleries and listen to
singing and scripture-reading for
five consecutive hours, though they
do not understand what iq being
read, the IJ.ble toeing in clntsic Ar
menian while ihu common people
speak modern Armenian. Hals
are retained tin the head while
shoes are left at the church door,
and as there aro thousands of at
tendants, exchanged are often made
in footwear involuntarily.
In the course of his remarks Mr.
Hasnaojian took occasion to com
pliment the United States, I rig
