Vcxtliblei,
From recent developments it Is ap
patent that tlic Southern States will
not possess tho monopoly of supplying
northern cities with garden products,
?ays the Philadelphia llecord. The
eeleuce of refrigeration and the con
utructlon of refrigerator ships and re
frigerator earn has reached gudi ft high
Mato that It Is now possible to ralso
fruit, It might ho bald, In almost any
part of tho world, and carry it to any
other part. The fact has been for
years demonstrated by tho shipment of
carcasses from Australia to England by
tho shipload, w hero an enormous trade
has boon built tip. The same principle
can be applied to the transportation of ;
fruits. A very large proportion of tho !
product of California Is now shlppe<|M
eastward In refrigerator cars, and some I
of tho 11 nest fruits on display In tho
East come from that State in this way.
The agriculturist* In the South have re
cently had their attention directed to
tho advisability of diversifying crops
by the high price paid for garden pro
ducts. Tho mnrkot garden has or lato
years become a very important fuctor
in southern agricultural economy.
Enterprising capitalists, since the de
velopment of Mexico by railroads have
been looking at tho possibilities of cll
puite there, and have taken steps In j
some cases to establish plantations for |
tho growth of fruits on a large scale,
which It is their Intention to ship by re

reason why garden truck could not bo !

and profitably to a great many cities i
and towns throughout the Fulled j
Slates. A great many products there j
are four to eight weeks ahead of the I
South. Dairy farming has become
very profitable. Milk in largo cities
sells ii t 25 cents in Mexico; butter at .'50 j
to -18 cents a pound. 1 .;d>or costs only
from 1'J to 25 cents a day. Sugar cane
turned into brown Rtigar yields from
$70 to $U5 an acre gross. (Jreen barley
and corn are raised in largo quantities
for fodder.
Cattle ralslnjr since the Spanish vrnr
has been greatly stimulated, and tho
t.'estern cattlemen are now* there lay
ing the foundations for big ranches.
Wheat is cultivated on the high table
lands of Contra I .Mexico, but l^.jy^not
