? of Mr. Copelanri'N Manage
ment of the Schools.
To Editor of Camden Ohroniolo.
Dear Si I:? I read with much in
terest In Tho Ohroniolo of March 9th,
JhH r. L. L. Copcland's reply to "Sine
qua non," and rusk the privilege to
?ay a few words of approval of
Oopeland's work as County Supw*
intendent of Education.
The adgage, "give honor to whom
honor ia due," can with all propriety
apply In Mr. Copeland's adtninistm*
tion. Few men could have taken
tUe work under the e tp barr n spm o n t s
(indebtedness) that Mr. Copland's
figures show and in no short a time
work it up to the basis it now main
tains. And again to think that thin
has been done without any serioun
friction or damage to the school
work i. e. reduction of teachers sal
aries or cutting off the length of
sohool term is marvellous.
Ilis administration is noted also,
not alone, for its business and econ
omy, but earnest; efforts in trying t?>
ralso the standard'of teaching and
securing tho most competert tench
ers whenever ho can. One who will
oarefnlly study tlie methods purHu?*d.
by Mr. C??poland and note tho im
provement* can but sny that in n
few years our schools will attnin to n
standard never before reached. Ma
ny of our colored schools have suf
fered on account of incouipo'ciil
teachers. But many ofthesw teach-1
ers are learning that, competency is
the thing demanded now, and sotnr
are takiug advantage of every oppor
tunity to improve their condition.
This we attribute to Mr. Copeland's
positive and urgent demands upon
the teachers attending M>o summer
school*. Many teachers who could
not attond these schools woi'e prof
ited by a careful study and review a!
home.
We are ttlfpe/ti! also that such an
administration will bfiog about long
er school torms nnd n better pay (<
teachers Of oonrno we believe lhu'
better teachers will naturally demand
better pay and so we urge upon nl
teachers to bettor equip themctoSve*
for thor calling. The longthning <?l
the school term depend? upon our
officers whom wo bolievo will b<<
able, under Mr. Copeland'* bu8inc*s
like and economizing mansgetnent,
to give a longer term to the country !
scl ools.
I do not mftko this ciimmfiit
th nkni; it. will commend Mr.
Ccpeland to the public, a.sido frum
tho aotu&l work which he lots don?\
l ut morel}* to eivc a colorcd. man's
impression of one whom ho regards
ni eminently wortliy.

ARE YOU GOING TO FAINT?
If bo, write to the Southern faint Company of PineblufT, N.
0, and secure their price list. They can give you a better
'paint n< less money than you can get elsewhere. They do
mo! belong to the trust and can Bell at less price than those
who do. This is a Southern enterprise and should be patron
i ized by Southern people. The Publisher of this paper will ar
i range to secure paints for any of his subscribers, who would
like to order through The Chronicle. This paint has a thick
heavy body so that buyers can add Linseed oil and make the
paint % o lurther, and save money, as the oil will cost about
fifty cents a gallon.
j- "Write to the company telling them what colors you want
and how much, and price will be given. The paint contains
! the best material and a guarantee goes with ever}7 can, barrel
! and package of paint.
