The Greenwood Situation.',
Governor McSweeney is keeping in
touch with the work of the officers in
Greenwood. It has be ?n stated that at
a mass meeting, it was decided to ask
him 'to offer a reward. Til's the gover
nor may do if th? matter is brought
to his attention in the proper way, but
he has received no official notice of
such action. He has been flooded with
letters from so-called detectives offer
ing their services, but Gov. McSweeney
is not disposed Lo think seriously of
the members of the ' profession," and
does not think their work would be
effective.

The first sale of tobacco la
Orangeburg county took place Wed
nesday at the Orangeburg ?obacco
?warehouse, and there were several
bundled people present from the coun
try and town to witness the tovcl

ity to witness tobacco sales. On the
other -hand, many were present on ac
count of their interest in the sales,
having tobacco in the warehouse. Be
tween thirty and forty thousand lbs.

co was of an inferior quality, and
brought a very low price. A consid
erable quantity brought prices ranging
from 4 to 5, 6, and 7 cent s. Experi

Karlv corn is poor and beyond im
provement. Laite corn stands in urgent
need of rain to make even an ordinary

places and underway elsewhere.
Tobacco harvest is about finished ex
cept over tho western districts, where
it is drawing to a close. The yields are
generally satisfactory, but worms are
still troublesome.
JUce is heading well. In some sec
tions harvesting is uuderway, and will
soon bo general. Upland r l?"c. |s very
poor.
It Is too dry for turnips to com?- up
or grow over the western counties. Tho
areas of heaviest rainfall define the

N. C\, says that the storm played havoc
on Pcracoke Island, destroying thirty
houses and two churches, washing
away the Norfolk and Southern Rail
road piers, grounding several steamers
and schooners, wrecking small craft of
fishermen, drowning not less than
twenty men and all tho horses and cat
tle on the island. It was the most dis
astrous storm that section lias over
known. The Island was under water
three days*.
