I If there are those who think as 1 have sug
gested, then 1 beg leave to differ with
t hem, from the fact, that the cheaper a
product becomes, a product that is abso
lutely nccessarv for tho comfort and.' wel
fare of humanity as is Hie case with cot
ton. then the importance of producing H
at the hast possible cost, calls for our at
tention, and in my judgment should have
attention.
The time lias past and gone, when it
pays any one in this country to plant on
the extensive plan, \\ o will readily agree
1 presume, that the only possible hojk> for
success in the production of any crjip, H"
planting on the intensive order. Intensi
fication ei diversification should be the
goal for which .wo are reaching with out
strcached arms.
Then if it is agreed that tho intensive
mode of farming is the proper one, then it
follows Unit the subject that I have chosen
fir this occasion is one of groat merit,
and upon reflection, calls for close and
very attentive handling
This brings us up directly to the discus
sion of the application of manures to the
cotton crop.
In the cultivation of cotton in order to
get the greatest yield, we must furnish the
plant with a manure or combination of
manures, containing a sulliciciicy of the
tineo ingredients that are absolutely neces
sary in order that wo may obtain the bes-t
result 9.
The plant tnu*t have Nitrogen, Phos
phoric Acid and Potash and after wo have
decided upon it manure that will furnish
these three necessities in the right proper
tlon. then conies our question of how to
apply and when to apply, in order that
the greatest good may accrue.
Now in the discussion of lids question,
we very naturally wdl have to consider
first, when or at what singe in the hand
ling of the crop are we to apply our ma
nures, and then, how, or whether it shall
be put deep into the ground or applied as
a top dressing. It will depend of conise,
to a great extent, upon what kind of ma -
nure is to bo used. If we expect to
stable or barnyard Uia nil ro, green cotton
seed, or any other rough manure, then
my judgement, the proper timo to nppiyl
it. is beforu tho cotton is planted, us oady^
in March a? it is possible to do so; and
4ic\v to apply it. will depend upon tho
character of the soil to which it is to be
applied.
A light candy, porou* Soil docs uoi pro.
duco well, if manures fire applied In the
Sftiito manner as is customary to ?PPV'
them to a stiff clay soil.
Now to discuss this question intelligent
! ly let us take tho npplioution of a certain
! m.inure for consideration And as stable
manure conies nearer boing a perfect ma
nure. containing tho necessary food supply
to the plant, in bolter proportion*, with
out tlie additional commercial fertilizers,
then wo will discuss its applicutjott' Of
course, in the application, it wfTl depend
upon the quantity that we have to use, us
to when and how it is to bo applied. We
will suppose, for convenience of discui-i^n,
n case, where a sufficiency, for all purposes,
'and nil modes of applications are at hand.
In a case of this kind, then I should sny,
in order that the greatest benefit might ac
crue, apply as curly in January, as possi
ble, after the land has been thoroughly
broken with sub soil plows and well Jiar
rowed, throwing it broad oast upon the
lop of the soil, not allowing it ppiral in,
until the ground is being prepared for
enrting in tho seed. Wtfwre there is an
abundance of *t?ble manure, it should
novcr bu applied to the drill, where the
plMTs are expected to statid, as would be
?'?? niArto rtf niYtc-ochire where thero
the country must bo talcn into considera
tion, in the u* offtnj manure?, and they
mast bo applied with du? respect to iliese
conditions. In a light sandy soil, tho
manner of application, whioli I have spoK
en of. to my mind appears proper, just and
-rsMonstils, and should tried. by those
tf there be any. who have never tried it*
bat on the contrary, if the land be red Miff
