storm struck near the National come

tiro city, leaving tip path markod by i
death and desolation. Mou, women,
and childron wero awakonod without a
inomont's warning to meot death by
falling walls, or in the flames which
ongulfed many of the wrecked build*
lugs.
Tho scene following tho first terrific
crabh of tho storm was one of awful
gmndeur. .business blocks, handsome
mansions, hotels and humble cottagos
sore razed and scattered in shapeless
masses. Hovoral of the wreokB caught
lire and tho inflammable timbers burn
ed furiouBly. The oity waB orowdod
with rurul visitors, many o I whom
wero sleeping at boarding houses and
unrogistorod. For this reason the num
ber of victims who perished in Fort
Smith lust night, may nover be defi
nitely known. The tornado struck Gar
rison avenue, at the cornor of Ninth
stroet, aud made a clean ewoep from
tbero to tho Texas corner.
The ruins caught fire from the night
lamps. Seven bodies wero taken from
these ruins. Tho Burgess Hotel, threo
story brick, on Townseau avenue, -was
demolished. Thoro have been eight
bodies already taken from tho ruins.
Kcrcuo parties aro still at work at both
placos aud oxpeot to find ueveral more
bodios. Ceorgo Cartor's houso was one
of tho first struck. It was turnod com
pletely over and is now supportod on
its roof. A half pan? of glass was driven
thvough Carter's body, almost severing
tho heud from tho trunk. M. \V. Burk's
foundry was demolished. Tho beauti
ful Nutional cemetery is a wreck. Fort
.Smith's $50,000 high school building
was badlv wrecked. It was one of tho
few buildings upon which thoro was
tornado insurance.
The tornado destroyed two historic
buildings. Judge Parker's residence is
l>a<l!y wreckod aod the old rector man
sion, where Albert Pike passed his
days, is u pile, of ashes, the ruins hay
ing caught fir# from a lamp. The First
Haptist Church aud the Contral Moth
odist Church wore raxed and are now
only n scattered pile of kinlding wood.
The Church of the Immaculate Concep
tion and Hrownscoinbe Memorial
Church lost their spires and sustained
"?her damage. The storm struck the
city near the National cemetery and
swept throughout the hoart of tho
town. Leaving Fort Smith it bounded
for Van Buron and continued to the
river, demolishing '"?everything in its
path. News from outsido points is not
yet at hand, but rumors of groat dam
ago have reached here, it being re
ported that a number of persons wore
killed.
