name, it seems that there has been

modest in iheir demands as to area
from Kershaw. They leave off a
part of what thoy termed the "back'
woods section" of Kersha^. We
notice further that the bulldozing
method (hat characterized the Salom
county movement eyon af(or the
county, had been defeated, has given
place to a less offensive plan. So
we see that thoy have learned some
thing by experiencing defeat. From
this point of view, the Lee county
movement is moro worthy of success
than was Salem.
But the question for tho masses
of the people, in the seventy. five
square miles that it will take from
Korshaw county, to consider is, will
taxes bo higher or lower if annexed
to Leo county.
It has been a noted /act all the
time, so far as wo have boon ablo to
learn, that Bishopville has been tho

it is to their interest to make a

can. and no one blames them to work
for it. Possibly there may bo some

and work for tho new county for
that reason. In fact we have heard
the name of one of our new county

probable candidate for Coroner.

many important events have hap
pened that will hold a prominent
place in historj*, and will behead
with great interest by succeeding
generations.
The Cuban Rebellion has beon
watched with the greatest interest
by all nations. For many years,
the Cubans have been taxed a-nd
imposed upou by Spanish author
ities tint III they could endure the
hated yoke no longer and therefore
rose in rebellion. Tho Cubans
have fought with great bravery,
and every American wishes to* see
them wi n their 'freedom. Z~~

This war was brought on by an up
rising of the Christians of Crete
against the power of Turkey , The
Cretans being oppressed by the
Turk&, clamored for reforms; re
forms were promised, but were not
given; the Cretans immediately re?
volted, and the Greek* espoused
their canse, accordingly war broke
out between Greece and Turkey,
All christian nations should be in
sympathy -with the Greeks; for

This struggle fins led Greece and
Tin key to war. The Greeks have
been horoioly lighting, and show

of the true bravery shown at Ma
rathon and Thermopylae in their
veins. Hut of late, their struggles
have been weaker, all on account
of tho overpowering power of Tur

The Venezuela Arbitration troa
| ty has been a most important fac
tor in our history. By this treaty,
America showed to th^-world that
America henceforth was going to
have a "say so" in all matters re
specting the peace of the Western
Hemisphere. The autonomy o!
Venezuela was respected, thus giv
ing an exeellout example of the
good of arbitration. This success
ful treaty moved England to sug
gest to America to enter into an
arbitration tieaty lasting five years
but it was, not passed by the
House of Ropresentativcfe on ac
count of two thirds no( voting for
it.
Several important matters have
happened latoly, that draw tho at
