To Squeeze the Farmers.
Col. D. P. Duncan, manager of
the State Farmers' Alliance has
stated to the Columbia Register
that a trust has been formed to
force up the price of cotton ties.
Last yeai. the exchange paid 7,2e
a bundle for ties delivered in car
load lots in Columbia. This year
the price has been raised to $i.30
a bundle in wholesale lots whi li
will make them cost the farmers
about- $1 40. There is no . c xcuse
for this one hundred per cent, i iso
except to squeeze the farmers.
Colonel/' Duncan has received
from the. Cincinnati Barbed Wire
Fence Company a letter offering
wire tires to be used as a eubsti
lute for Hat ir6n ties in bailing cot
ton. The wire is what is known as
No. 10 and is nearly as large as a
lead pencil. These wiro tire? are
offered at ok/or a bundle, con
taining 250, while there are only
30 flat ties in a bundle. Colonel
Duncan remarked that the Alliance
would have to investigate and see
if a bale bound with these wire
ties would be accepted at compres
ses and for shipment. He was cer
tain the cotton mills ol the South
would accept them and could see
no reason why th^y should -not be
considered ?. "good delivery" at
of m presses. If t&ese wire tics can
he used the fiyht 'against the Tie
Trust will be won before it is made.
